Date: 2/21/10 10:59 PM Just wondering if anyone has a singer 281-1 industrial sewing machine. How do you like them? Do they work for heavy weight fabric? Are parts easy to get? I have access to get a used one but don't want to be stuck with something heavy and hard to work with. How old are these machines? |

Date: 10/24/11 8:41 AM I hope someone who owns one of these will post specific information for you. I can only say that the table in the photo is identical to the one with my Singer 591, which is a 26-year-old machine, and I definitely think the one in the photo is much older than that. Mine also has the oil "window."
To Charliecat, have you ever thought about a Singer 29-4? I've seen them on Ebay and Craigslist. I think they were used in many a shoe repair shop years ago. |

Date: 2/14/12 10:24 AM I used one of these for 18 years.(at my last job) I am currently looking for one. They are nice fast straight stitch machine (no reverse) When it come to heavy weight fabric or leather... it's hit or miss... but I would say mostly miss. This is a really fast straight line machine. It likes regular weight fabrics will do sheer but does takes a really lite touch and will not do fine hems pulls |
