How did you learn to sew: I watched my mother, grandmother, and aunt create wonderful things. My mom bought me a little crank sewing machine when I was about 7 and I started making Barbie clothes, then my grandma gave me her 1926 Singer... straight stitch, no back stitch, and a screw for stitch length. I sewed a lot of things on that machine and still have it, hoping one of my nieces will want and appreciate it. I took Home Ec in junior and high school. I love clothes, fabric, creating, and sewing is perfect.
What aspect of sewing do you find most challenging: Oh, the pattern vs the real me, not what I envision myself to be. You see a wonderful pattern and sew it up fully expecting to look like the model on the envelope.... and it just doesn't look the same. BUT this is why PR is so helpful... you get to see patterns made up on real people! The other challenge is the fabric vs the pattern. You really have to pay attention to the fabric suggestions because the wrong fabric can give you totally different outcomes - some wanted, some not so much.
Which sewing book do you refer to most often: Well, I do not like reading, even sewing books, but I do have lots! So, there really isn't any book that I refer to, although I keep telling myself to use the books, stop trying to reinvent the wheel! Someone has already figured it out, just read!
What are your sewing goals for this year: To rely less on my quick and easy TNTs, and to sew more challenging, unusual, detailed clothes. I finally (after 5 attempts) got a perfect fitting jeans pattern. Normally, I'd sew them up, they wouldn't work and I'd move on to the next. Well, because of PR and all the encouragement, I kept at my Jalie pattern and finally (just last week), got my perfect jeans. I'd also like to do a leather, hardware accessorized purse, a prom dress for my niece, a Chanel type jacket (I got the fabric and pattern!) and knockoff something from Anthropologie.
What are you sewing right now: I generally have several things cut out and ready to sew. I will spend an entire day cutting out things. At the moment, I'm down to the last thing in the pile, and it's Vogue 8600 in the Vera Wang Techno Satin.
Pick your favorite pattern: oh, this is hard.... there are so many... well, the one that I've made the most is Simplicity 4076 because it never disappoints!
What you love most about PatternReview?: All the friends I've made for sure! I've met some great sew'rs and have made some great friends because of this site. I also love all the information available. There's no where else that has all this information. PR has pushed me to sew better and keeps me motivated.
Any other hobbies? I love to hike in my local mountains. A typical weekend is a nice hike in the early morning, and then sewing with a movie in the afternoon and dinner with family and friends in the evening, topped off by a late night of some more sewing. I also enjoy gardening, taking photos (around town) and hanging out with one (or all) of my 3 sisters.
Your profession, where do you live? I am an administrative assistant and assistant to the IRB Committee (I don't mind the word secretary either) for a well known economics professor at Caltech, a small University in Pasadena, CA. I love my job as I get to meet all sorts of creative types every day from all over the world. The professors and students may not be into sewing, but they certainly are creative and interesting to be around. I live nearby in La Crescenta... same place you may have heard of a lot lately, as the Station Fire and subsequent mudslides have been in the news lately. (But I am at the "bottom" of the town, not right up against the foothills, so I'm fairly safe from mud and debris.)
And by the way, remember my Capri Sun Juice Jacket I made last year? Well, it was recently purchased by Ripley's Believe It or Not, to display in one of their museums. I like that I will have something in a Museum of Oddities!

Date: 3/5/10 0:24 AM I love this new feature on PR - an opportunity to get to know a member and learn something about them. So happy to see that Sue V is in the spotlight for some well deserved attention.
Sue didn't mention her unique ability to enable others when shopping for fabric .... this woman sets a standard mere mortals can only aspire to! One time at FIDM (in the $1 room) I couldn't decide if I wanted 4 or 5 yards of a particular fabric....Sue said "heck, it's only $1 a yard, take it all" and that was my V8 moment....why didn't I think of that? Of course, she was right, so now when we got there I either buy it all or split the fabric with Sue.
------ 2009: bought 140 yards, used 184 yards, net increase in volunteer fabric 44 yards ... total stash 385
