So I've gone a bit mad and am dying to make this "Steampunk Cinderella" gown to wear to Mardi Gras next year. I'm linking because I can't post the picture due to copyright and all that stuff. I'd decided I was going to make a costume and I just LOVE the idea of this! I'm looking for pattern suggestions for my experiment. I'm getting started soon because I know it will be a lot of work.

(by the way, anyone else LOVE the Girl Genius webcomic? So awesome!)

Actually, that looks like a fun dress to recreate.

Elaine (who knows absolutely nothing about Girl Genius...yet.)

That was my first thought upon seeing it - MUST.MAKE! I think I need to find patterns for a big princessy skirt, a sweetheart neckline, and an underbust corset. I am just hoping that someone more familiar with costumey patterns than I will have suggestions for something that works.

(You should totally read Girl Genius. If you appreciate any combination of "Adventure, Romance, MAD SCIENCE!" you will love it!)

From what I've read Steampunk has a Victorian influence.

For an underbust corset you could do Laughing Moon pattern co.

However, you might consider an over bust and a chemise underneath.

Without the jacket, you could play with this skirt.

or this other corset.

Before you get committed to the underbust corset idea ... just how busty are you? If you're bigger than a B cup you should seriously think about an overbust corset to avoid "wardrobe malfunctions" with the strapless dress in the picture you linked to ...

I just found this on the internet, but I've never ordered from them, the catalogue shows all of the silhouettes that are available. It's a Victorian Pattern catalogue (maybe if you search for them on PR you can find some more info on them). It's called Truly Victorian and they even have a Gallery of costumes made up from the patterns.

Also you can find the Simplicity / Laughing Moon patterns on ebay, I've seen them come up every now and then and they are much cheaper.

Good Luck, it looks like a fun project.Truly Victorian

If you're looking for more ideas (versus patterns), you could also check out Clockwork Couture. NAYY - the site was recommended to me by a friend because I'm supposed to be helping to costume a Steampunk Shakespeare production next month.

Most of the clothes have no application in my real life (more's the pity), but I'm having a serious yen for a pair of Victorian two-toned high button boots.

Never seen Girl Genius before - of course my graphic-novel, comic-loving DBF says, "Really? I thought that would be something you'd like." Then show it to me, sweetie, and maybe I'll like it.

Good luck with your gown.

Hmm, I am bigger than a B cup! I've never worn a corset before, so I didn't think about that. I've never made one either, and was under the impression that an overbust is much harder to make than an underbust...

Thanks! I don't want to do a chemise per se because I would like to recreate the dress as faithfully as I can, and there is no chemise underneath, but the corset and the skirts look good.
