All of a sudden, my 1 year old sewing machine (Janome) is playing up.
The handwheel is very still and difficult to turn, and the foot pedal is running very slow.

I have searched on the Net and people just say to oil it, but the book specifically says the machine never needs oiling.

Anyone got any ideas before I take it to an expensive repair shop? It's very frustrating: there are only 3 days left of the stash contest

Your 1 year old machine should have a Janome warranty. Visit Janome's website for your machine and the warranty policy. Janome' website has an Ask Jan, you can inform her of the problem with your new machine and she will guide you with a fix or a solution. Janome responds quickly sometime's same day or next day.

Have you removed the needle plate and whatever else can be removed down there (shuttle race, hook) and cleaned out any fuzz or lint completely? Your manual should tell you how to do this. You can use canned air or a small brush or a vacuum hose to get the lint out. That would be my first troubleshooting move.

Agree with Dandelion. Inability to turn the hand wheel on any machine is likely the result of some sort of jam in the hook/bobbin area. (The exceptions have usually been dropped onto hard surfaces!)

I agree that your warranty might take care of this problem..but I was wondering if your machine has a stop/start button and if so and it is accidently pushed or activated..the foot control will not work. The foot control needs to be unplugged on most machines for the stop/start to work.
If your machine has a stop/start button..maybe check and see if it is stuck in the on position..that would keep your foot control from working.

Thanks for the replies.

I had already cleaned out the hook race etc (I do it after each garment, like a good sewer)

The foot pedal does run, but is doing so very slowly. There's no stop/start button, just the main on/off.

I have emailed my dealer, he gave me a 5 year parts, labour and carriage guarantee with it. In the meantime, my mother has lent me her machine (it's terrible, but it's a machine).

Hmm sounds like your machine is in need of some mechanic tlc if there is nothing anywhere you can see that could be causing the problem- especially the foot control.
Wish you luck with the contest and your machine.
You are right not to oil if if you machine specifically says not to oil it.
Just one more thought...do you have the sort of bobbin winding mechanism that you have to declutch the handwheel by turning the inner wheel or pullin it out? iF you do be sure it is fully tightened as it should be for regular sewing or this can cause the machine to run slowly and offer resistance to the needle because it is not properly in gear. Fingers crossed this is your problem as it is easily and at no cost solved!

I wonder if there is a short in the cord to the foot control or the plug into the machine.

I already tried the bobbin winding de-clutch thing. Bobbin winding works just fine.

edit: I've just heard back from my retailer, who said it was a screw inside the machine that had worked loose. Obviously a factory-fault, so I am covered by my warranty, which is good news.

Less good news that I couldn't participate in the last few days of the stash contest, but there's always next time.

So you're saying you had a screw loose? Don't go saying that too loudly!
