Date: 4/1/10 11:07 AM HI,
I would like to make a baby quilt for my niece's 1 year old daughter. What would be the best batting to use for a quilt that will be used??? I would like her to be able to drag it, step on it, etc. A not for show quilt, but a must have, go everywhere with her quilt. ------ Modern: BabyLock Quest Plus, Bernina Activa 140, Viking Platinum 770, Pfaff Creative 7530, Janome 1600P
Vintage: Singer 15-91, Kenmore 1030

Reply to cherylwashere Date: 4/1/10 3:46 PM Definitely a cotton, or an 80/20 cotton/poly blend. Something really durable would be nice, like Quilters Dream or Warm & Natural. Even flannel would work, and you don't have to quilt it very closely, either. Next page>> |

Date: 4/1/10 4:50 PM Many thanks, Jennifer and Doris. Very helpful, I am such a novice quilter. I thought I would challenge myself (self teaching) and begin with a crib size quilt for her. I went today to for the fabric, picked out vibrant colors. Read in one of my quilting books or magazines that babies like bright colors.

Reply to cherylwashere Date: 4/5/10 8:37 PM I wouldn't quilt it too dense. I had a baby quilt that I made machine quilted by another party and she did it dense, even though I told her not too. It seemed way too stiff for a baby, not cuddly.
One other thing I do when I make a baby quilt, is use the left over fabric to make a small (12" X 15" or so) what I call a drag around quilt. That way they are not dragging around the crib quilt and little girls can use it later (if it's still useable) for a doll quilt.

Date: 4/6/10 11:38 AM I personally love polyester batting for baby quilts. I use Quilters Dream Poly, and it is just beautiful!
I wouldn't quilt it heavily either, that makes it stiff and not cuddly at all. And that's exactly why I prefer a poly batting for kids. The quilt will get tortured, washed, dragged around, and nothing is more durable than poly.
Here's a recent baby quilt I made, using poly batting. The poly gives the quilting nice definition, and it's super soft.

WOW, your quilt is gorgeous. Love the colors and stitching. Which of your machines did you use to do all of this on??? I can only dream of someday making a quilt that beautiful.
Will I find Quilters Dream Poly in Joann's Fabrics??? Many thanks for the info. Cheryl ------ Modern: BabyLock Quest Plus, Bernina Activa 140, Viking Platinum 770, Pfaff Creative 7530, Janome 1600P

Reply to CJ Tinkle Date: 4/11/10 4:53 PM What a lovely quilt. I agree about the poly batting for baby quilts. It fluffs up nicely in the dryer and is much more cuddly than straight cotton. The newer poly batts are certainly not like the early ones that bearded and went stringy in a quilt after many washes. Next page>> |
