Anyone have an idea how much I should charge for making a 17 3/4" by 80" by 3" cover for a bench cushion?

I took the old cushion cover apart and will use the zipper from that, also will use the cord from the old cushion for the new piping. It took me an hour to take everything apart.

The gal that does my hair and I are exchanging services. I thought about keeping track of my hours, but I don't do this type of sewing very often so am not all that fast. It doesn't seem like a fair way to calculate the cost.

All you have to do is look at the fabric and it ravels, so I had to serge the edges. That slowed things down a bit.
Of course the surger had to act up and I ended up threading it from scratch, twice. I hate it when that happens.

Did I mention that the fabric has a chenille thread that runs across the back creating a perfect loop that my normal foot kept getting stuck in. I did have a foot with toes that point up more than my usual foot does, so elimited that problem.

I sewed the zipper in with a new zipper foot I bought, Bernina 14N. Not a good idea as the fabric puckered. I didn't notice the puckering until I had about 50" of the zipper sewed in. Ripped that all out, which is when I noticed how much the fabric was raveling.

On the one hand I have spent a lot of time on this project already, but then on the other hand a lot of the time was caused by the serger thread problem, choosing the wrong zipper foot etc.

What do you think is a fair way to figure out how much to charge?

I charge $2 per linear inch (the long way), but that includes foam. I don't know if that's right or wrong, but works for me.

Thanks my-seamstress. I was hoping someone whould reply.
$2 it will be.
I wished I had never agreed to this exchange as the fabric is giving me fits. I am using the cording from the old cushion and I ended up about 25" short per side. The differnece being the old cushion was made from home dec cotton fabric and the new home dec fabric is made from thicker nasty polyester fabric. grrrrrr.
Did I mention that the stuff just keeps raveling.
tomorrow I will make more piping and hopefully get the thing sewn together. Oh. I did get the zipper strip done, fitting puckers all the way. grrrrr.
I need a piping foot for my serger. Things would go a lot faster is I had one. Think I will make a trip to the shop tomorrow and check out the price.
Thanks again

Nothing like (grin here) being 'forced' to buy a few new feet for your favorite toys... sounds like a good learning project and you will come away from it with some new skills... a couple a new machine feet and a hair cut or two or three. Bravo!

I feel your pain regarding the unravelling. I did a giant window seat cushion out of a chenile. It had a self welt. I learned to cut the strips for the welting a little wider when dealing with that kind of fabric after that project. What a pain!
