Date: 5/22/10 5:25 AM I haven't bought it ..yet!
I found a vintage machine at a local Goodwill store. It is all metal with only a tension dial and front lever for controls. All the parts seem to be there and it is in running condition. The case is newer.
The machine is an Alden's Super Deluxe and states made in Japan.
It is priced at $23.00
Does anyone have any information on this brand?
ETA The machine is two-tone blue/gray. There is a black version on this page, sixth one down:

Date: 5/22/10 7:12 AM I don't really know anything about this machine, but I remember Aldens as a mail order catalog store in the 60's and 70's. It was kind of like Sears so I'm guessing the machine was made by another company that had the contract for Aldens sewing machines. I had a Mongomery Ward machine during that era that was made by a Japanese maker. It was a good machine for the price, but I was a beginner then and had trouble with tension. I didn't know enough about machines to adjust it. If it looks like another brand from that era, it probably is. For $23, I'd buy it and give it a whirl. I've found that even if you don't use the machine for all of your sewing needs, you learn alot from restoring, cleaning and researching a vintage machine. ------

Date: 5/22/10 1:52 PM Brother made some badged machines for Alden's, Wards and Penny's I think. I know Happy of Japan also made some Wards models, I don't know if Happy made any machines for Aldens.

Is there a series of letters and numbers stamped into the underside (usually JA- or JC- or the like followed by some digits). Having that would allow you to identify the manufacturer. Dating the Japanese machines is very difficult -- they didn't have lists of commissioning dates like Singer maintained. You can often find literature with the machine, or advertisements from the period, to help figure out when it was made.

It was actually 29.99....However, it had a white tag and it was 50% off white tags. I got it for $14.99.
The motor runs smooth, but there is some problems with the upper tension that I need to check out. It may be that I am threading it incorrectly as it has been a few decades since I used a machine this old.The machine is made by Hitachi. The serial number is H36117 and it has B-3 stamped on the underside.
