Here in New England it's a bright summer day today. One of the very few we get each year, so I am taking this opportunity to share some thoughts with you.
PatternReview.com is a sewing community. Any community, must have the support of its members; otherwise, harmony cannot be achieved. Some of you have just joined and some of you have been here since PatternReview's inception in 2001. Regardless of your sign-up date, each one of you has contributed to making the site what it is today. I am grateful to all of you who have walked with me in this fun journey-- which promises to be even more exciting as time goes on.
However, a growing community cannot survive without rules and guidelines-- some of which you may like, and others which you may not. To be a part of the community, these guidelines need to be followed-- and our recent trial of changing moderating styles (which I will discuss below) has illustrated this necessity to us.
I am sure that you already know that if you are using this site in any capacity, you have agreed to all the terms and conditions which include the posting guidelines. Please visit the Conditions of use page and Posting Guidelines for a complete overview of our terms and conditions. The links to these pages along with our contact info is at the bottom of every page on PatternReview.com. If you do not agree with any part of these conditions, you should not be using this site.
This Announcement is to clarify three points: Intellectual Property, Access to One’s Own Individual Information as posted, and Board Moderation.
Over the last few months a few issues have been raised which have led me to believe that there is some confusion around the copyright ownership of the content you post. So in the interest of clarity, and under the guidance of my lawyer, I have updated the copyright clause in the Conditions of Use to highlight its non-exclusivity:
10. Ownership; Intellectual Property.
You are responsible for and retain all rights to the content you post on PatternReview.com. By posting on PatternReview.com you grant PatternReview.com, a non-exclusive, royalty-free, perpetual, irrevocable, and fully sub-licensable right to use, reproduce, modify, adapt, publish, translate, create derivative works from, distribute, and display such content throughout the world in any media. PatternReview.com needs these rights because without them it could not perform various necessary functions such as displaying this Content on the website to all of its users. Since these rights are non-exclusive you retain your rights to use the Content you are posting to PatternReview.com in any other way you see fit.
While on the subject of content, it has been brought to my attention that some of you think that if you are a free member, you don't have access to your own reviews after a certain number of months have passed. This is simply not accurate. All members - Free or Friends of PR - have access to all the member generated content on the site at all times. You do, however, need to be logged in to view the older reviews. That simply means logging in with your free account or FoPR account.
And finally let's talk about message board moderation.
Two months ago the moderators and I requested some time to re-evaluate the moderation process. I am pleased to inform you that we have some answers for you today. But before I do that, I must thank you for your patience in bearing with us during these last two months while we tried a different approach in moderating the Miscellaneous topics.
As you must have noticed during the last 2 months we attempted a light handed moderation on the Misc. boards - a part of the forum used for non-sewing discussions but one that results in the most heated conversations. The sheer number of Objectionable Post messages we received makes it evident that we must resume moderating the Misc. boards like all the others. As such, if you post on the Misc., other forums, or anywhere else on the site, please make sure that your posts meet our posting guidelines because they will be enforced. While I love the passion PR members have for non-sewing subjects in the miscellaneous section – I love conversations about sewing a lot more!
If the moderators or I determine that a post is in violation of any of the guidelines, it will be deleted and a message will be sent to the poster. Determination of whether a post violates the guideline is not up for discussion. Moderators' decisions are not taken lightly, and should not be discussed in the message boards. If you have an issue with moderation, please write to the individual moderator or to me privately at [email protected] Discussions about moderation, unless introduced by us, will be considered off-topic and deleted.Members who keep violating the guidelines will receive a warning from me and if they persist - their account will be banned and any content they have posted will be deactivated. I have not banned many members in the last 9 years of running PatternReview.com; however, if despite repeated warnings a member does not follow the guidelines, they will be banned from using PatternReview.com.
You can see the Complete Posting guidelines by clicking this link. Click here for our complete Terms and Conditions. Note that the first thing these guidelines talk about is respect. Please make sure that your posts are respectful towards each other and towards the site.
I am making this announcement Read-only because it is not up for debate. This has been a carefully thought out process. I have discussed all the input that has come to me over the past couple of months, and thank all of you for your considered thoughts and opinions you have sent.
Thank you all for reading, and thank you in advance for your cooperation and support.
