Date: 7/5/10 3:13 AM I have just bought my first jelly rolls and charm squares and wondered if they need to be prewashed. I always prewash everything before I piece my quilts, but I know others don't (especially if the fabric is good quality). It would make it so much easier and quicker to start straight away and I do wonder what fraying might happen to all the edges of the peices, given they are only 2 and a half inches wide.
I would be interested in anyone's experiences or thoughts.

Date: 7/5/10 11:36 AM I believe the Moda website, says you don't need to prewash, but if you decide to, put them in a lingerie bag, or you'll end up with a big mess of scraps. ------ My grandmother taught me to sew when I was 10, and I've been sewing ever since. |

Date: 7/5/10 1:03 PM I use a small bag, too, for small pieces. Also, I often clip the corners, which helps stop fraying on big and small pieces. |

Date: 7/5/10 8:28 PM Although I do prewash my quilting yardage (habit from prewashing garment fabric, mostly), I don't prewash small pieces like jelly rolls and charm squares - I find that you lose too much from fraying. A lingerie bag and not drying in the dryer do help ameliorate this somewhat. ------ I've moved! Visit my new sewing blog at http://chiralcraft.wordpress.com

Reply to Natasha B Date: 7/5/10 9:28 PM Get a water bottle, spritz the fabric pieces with water then press to dry. (Don't iron, press.) This should help with any pre-shrinking without the fraying. HTH ------ Belinda. Melbourne, Australia

Reply to Sew4Fun Date: 7/6/10 1:08 AM I guess the only other issue with quilting is the combination of colours - thus colour running rather than fabric shrinking is the bigger problem. I only buy good quality quilting fabric as too much time goes into the piecework to have it destryed in the wash. ------ Natasha
