Date: 7/20/10 12:18 PM Hi all,
Last February, I was fortunate enough to pick up both Pattern Magic volumes 1 & 2 while in San Fransisco. Since then, I have made a friend who is a professional Japanese/English translator.
Although, as many comment, the illustrations are excellent and with some sewing skill, a person's able to muddle their way through the books, I thought it would be helpful to at least understand the charts, symbols and basic Bunka construction methodology.
I have asked my friend to translate pages 4 thru 7 of volume 1 which, based on what I can glean from the pictures, seems to be commonly used symbols, how to grade, measurement charts and some basic method info.
If you would like a copy of the translated information, please let me know in this thread and I will be happy to send it to you. I won't be posting anything publicly, though, out of respect for copyrights.
I'm not sure when she'll be finished with the translation, but I'll let you know as soon as I've got it. Shouldn't be more than a week or so. :) ------ STASH TRACKING

Current (10.26.10): 92.375 yds

Date: 7/20/10 12:20 PM yes please. I often sew from Japanese magazines. A common guide would be great. ------ Too much fabric to count... |

Date: 7/20/10 12:44 PM I'm beginning to become really interested in them, as well. I enjoy the styles and I believe their approach to drafting will appeal to me once I can figure out what they're saying LOL.
While we're waiting for my friend to translate the pages, though, I found some terrific resources:
Moving Hands, a blog which has basic Japanese sewing terms translated.
and
Kanjii Dictionary. If you think a character might be a specific word, you put that word in in English and see if the corresponding character is accurate. ------ STASH TRACKING

Date: 7/20/10 3:02 PM Ditto, I'd love a copy when it's available. I've stared at these two books a lot, but never gotten around to trying to make anything. :) ------ I've moved! Visit my new sewing blog at http://chiralcraft.wordpress.com

Date: 7/20/10 3:34 PM I'm not 100% sure but I believe the symbol translation in the English Bunka books are the same as Pattern Magic. I have both and will compare tonight.

Date: 7/20/10 5:22 PM Awesome! I plan to order the Patten Magic books since they're up for preorder on Amazon and this will definitely help out with what I don't quite get with the drawings. |
