Hi friends, I had been looking for a Pink Happylite Sewing Machine for a few years now. I bid and won one on ebay a few weeks ago. I specifically asked about packaging and was assured it would be packaged well.

A bit of bubble wrap around the foot controller, and a few plastic air filed bags. The machine made it from NY to California with the spool pin broken. The plastic "lock nut" broke, the metal spool pin is fine. I suspect it could be fixed.

What gets me is that I have been looking for this particular machine for about three years. I paid about $60.00 for the machine and shipping. The seller is accusing me of "knowing" that it was packaged properly and it was USPS fault. I have zero and I mean zero tolerance for rude people.

I can deal with the broken part and it is not even worth me driving to the post office and dealing with it.

Negative Feed Back in order? I think all of us here get upset when a machine is damaged in any manner by a sloppy package job.

(I did get a good and I mean good laugh when the seller said the Bovine and Bovine case were present.)
The seller meant bobbin and bobbin case.

I read negative feedback with a very critical eye, and I'm appreciative of it when it is honest, factual, & non-emotional. If you do decide to leave a neg, stick to the facts. "Item packed w/o enough protection, arrived broken, seller refused responsibility" That's probably too many letters, but something along those lines.

I've not been very involved in eBay for some time, other than a few purchases (& my first really bad experience today!!!), so I'm a little rusty in wording for advice like this, but the best advice I can give is simply be factual.

I'm with JillyBe. Also, give it a day to calm down; your emotions are high right now and sure, like anyone else who's waited as long as you for a specific machine, would be mad, but give it a day to clear your head. Then provide negative feedback. This will force the seller to be much more careful packing things in the future.

I can say, so far, that I've received some good comments on how I pack things. It's overkill, maybe, but better safe than sorry. And the buyer is paying for postage. If a seller can't add a few more dollars into their postage costs for extra packaging (and not using it to make a buck), then that seller shouldn't be on ebay. Don't get me started on my black 301 horror story....

I'd agree with the others. Give yourself a day to calm down, and leave a negative with the facts. And if not too late, take pictures of how it was packed. They may come in handy if there's a dispute in the future.

Why am I thinking that if anyone buys a machine off ebay, it would be a good idea to have the cameras rolling while unpacking?

You may be surprised to learn that USPS is much better at paying claims than UPS. UPS has a policy that the item must be packed in order to survive shipping.. if it therefore does not survive..then it was not packed properly for shipping and the claim will be denied.

I am sorry about your machine.. and gee.. I have to wonder why all these machines are all of a sudden being damaged...or if we are just now posting about them.

I also had a damaged machine about 2 years ago.. and it was packed very well, but apparently had taken a four foot or better drop to the floor at one point..and it arrived cracked in half..the casing.. In my case the seller was excellent about refunding my money very quickly. Don't ask about the machine that I paid to be insured which never got here.. even though the tracking said it did. Good thing they did not have signature on that one, or I would have been out the money with no machine.

I am glad we are all posting about this.. as it will help our members to be sure and caution their sellers about packing.. and to be very picky who they buy from on ebay.

My policy is this.. I BUY.. And if the machine is damaged I file a claim.. clean and simple...which is why I ALWAYS back my purchases with a credit card.

You might ask your sellers about the UPS pack and ship promise..although I have heard about some having claim troubles even under that program.. Do not know how reliable that information is.

Two things I look at on eBay:

1. How many positives sound like the seller is good.

2. How many negatives, what are they about and - here is the MOST important thing I look at bar none - HOW DOES THE SELLER REACT TO NEGATIVES?

If a seller has a polite answer then I know this person tries, but if it is a snarky, mean and low down answer then that seller wouldn't get my business if they had the crown jewels for 50 cents.

As to the packing - file a claim and make sure you leave negative feedback. Those air filled plastic things are worthless - AMAZON loves those too and they are soooo bad.

I totally agree with both of Mufffet's points and would like to add another:

I look specifically for good feedback on how large, fragile items were packaged. If I don't see any evidence that the seller has experience in how to pack a sewing machine so that it will survive, I pass. A seller's assurance that they will pack it well doesn't mean anything if they don't know how to do it.

Negative feedback? Absolutely! Any moron should know that a sm is a delicate piece of equipment and to pack it tightly and correctly. And then to be rude? Unacceptable.

Can we see a picture of your sew happy pink machine? I have never heard of them! I went to the completed ebay listings and it didn't come up-- I want to see what you waited three years for!

You know, I have never sold a sm on ebay before, but I think what I will do if I do, is to pack it and show photos of how I packed it when its listed, so people will not be afraid to buy from me. You have to pack it anyway, why not take photos of how you did it?
