A buddy of mine is offering this for sale. It was her mothers'. It was made in 1987. any input is most appreciated. I don't have a serger at this time and frankly not sure I 'need" one but I am considering this pre-owned one as an entry into the serging world. I know that it was well taken care of!

Any thoughts on what to offer for the machine? I don't have access to a blue book.

While vintage/all metal sewing machines get all the love, sergers do not. I think it's the older sergers that give new sergers a bad rap for being hard to thread and hard to sew with. That's just my observation, though.

Welcome! Sandy!

My mom, my girlfriend and I all bought one when they came out. They are all still going strong! I also have 3 others from the 14U line and love them. Unless you knock out the timing or break a looper sewing over something too thick you won't have any problems. BTW, any serger will have those issues.

I've found them to be real workhorses and simple to use. Yes, you do have to adjust the tension yourself but that is a benefit not a drawback to me. It's easy to learn and allows tweaking. The 'brain' machines don't always know best :>)

Put a different color of thread on each spool and take some notes and you will be able to tell at a glance which needle or looper makes which part of the stitch. Use the same thread color as tension dial and then it will make sense.

I would ask your friend's permission to take it and have a dealer or someone you know who is familar with sergers to test drive it. I say this only because you haven't had one and might not catch a thread guide or something simple and think it has a problem.

After it's checked out I wouldn't pay more than $50 for it, less if all of the accessories and manual aren't with it.

Thanks for the great advice! I was thinking $50 myself and yes, all of the manuals, etc are with the machine. I posted this same question on SewForum and read some great things about this serger. I will make the offer and get it checked out, etc. thanks!

I have one and I got it brand new for Christmas in 1987! It still works great but the only thing I miss is it does not have differential feed. I got the Sewing With Nancy serger and use that on my PITA knits. I still use my old Singer and I don't know if I could ever part with it! I agree with the others $50.00. I hope you will like it and it will serve your needs!
