Date: 8/30/10 11:09 PM My mother worked for JC Penny and wrote the Bishop Sewing Method manual with Edna Bryte Bishop. She went on to tour the country teaching the bishop method at universites and later had her own public TV show. She is now 86, we've just moved her into a retirement community. She has very little storage room available, but she doesnt want to simply toss old materials.
Is anyone in the upstate NY area interested in rescuing some vintage teaching materials? |

Date: 8/30/10 11:39 PM I wonder if the American Sewing Guild would have any interest in these materials? Or perhaps a university or ?? Seems a shame not to keep them somewhere.

Don't really have an answer to your question, but must say a big "Thank You" to your mother and Edna Bryte Bishop for the book. A sewing friend pointed me in the direction of the book back in the 60's and I really learned a lot from it. Back in those days, there was little in the way of learning material for anyone wishing to learn more about the topic. I've consulted the book many times through the years and value my copy because of the help it gave me at the time.

The concepts were unbelievable and the result was spectacular. Your mother is very much revered by me. I don't live in Upstate NY, but close to the border. How much of this teaching material are we talking about, and where are you exactly? ------

Date: 8/31/10 9:53 AM Several years ago when I moderated the sewing/textiles section of OTWA (Online Traders Web Alliance) a woman contacted me wanting to know more about Edna Bryte Bishop and where to find books, etc. She said she was Ms Bishop's daughter and she lived in Michigan I think. Maybe there's a way to find that forum on the Way Back area of the web?
In any case, I think you should contact the land grant university in Michigan to see if their clothing/textiles dept would like these records. If they say no, then I'd try Ohio State or University of Illinois. I know the Bishop Method was popular in all the midwest states back in the 50s and 60s. ------

I just want to say how much I love the Bishop books. I downsized my sewing equipment/books/magazines but I kept my Bishop book!

Date: 9/1/10 2:55 AM I just feel a strong need to join the chorus here. As someone learning how to make clothes, that book is the most helpful one I've found. It tells me everything the others don't, and seems like it covers almost everything. If it weren't for your mother and Edna Bishop, I'd be lost. Make sure to tell her thank you from all of us.  |

Date: 9/13/10 7:41 PM Your mom is amazing. I just recently took out the Bishop book from the library. I'm a newbie, so I'm not getting the full grasp of it yet, but it seems like a great resource for the future. I'm in Westchester so I guess I wouldn't be of any help. |
