Date: 9/3/10 3:50 PM A 7.4 is a pretty big quake. I imagine things are a mess there right now. I do hope all our Kiwis check in when they are able to ... I know we have quite a few and I hope all are as well as can be expected. ------

Date: 9/3/10 4:33 PM I hope that everyone is okay. I remember the Loma Prieta quake (1989), which was a 7.1. That was pretty scary (scarier if you were in a city/town with tall brick buildings, not so bad if you were in the suburbs and you had a lot of candles and flashlights. I do hope that they don't have any rain while the power is out.

Date: 9/3/10 4:41 PM I live about 400km south of the epicentre and I was woken by the shaking. It was scary here - I can only imagine how awful it must have been to be closer  .
There has been a lot of damage to older buildings in the city of Christchurch (about 30km from the epicentre) but fortunately only a few reports of injuries so far. I think we are lucky that it hit when it did, at 4.30am, rather than later in the day when people would have been out and about.
My thoughts are with the people living in and around the Christchurch area  |

Date: 9/3/10 6:29 PM I am in Christchurch. It was very scary, but thankfully we had no structural damage or injuries. All the bookcases fell over, though. When my husband gets back from overseas I'll get him to fix them to the wall, as they could have caused a lot of damage if they fell on something or someone.
I've never been in an earthquake before so this was a doozy for a first-timer. Thank God it happened when the streets were almost empty. Most of the buildings that fell were very old ones in the city centre around the shopping areas, and today is Saturday. It could have been carnage. |

I first heard about the quake when I was at work, but the radio news did not give the city. I feel for those in Christchurch, but was glad to hear that my family who are further South (350 km South), should all be o'kay.
In the article they mentioned some areas having liquefaction. That is a concern here in BC on the Fraser River Delta.
I hope all are well and have minimal damage to their homes and businesses. ------

Date: 9/3/10 7:26 PM The first image in Michelle T's link is of one of my favourite restaurants. I don't think I'll be eating there again any time soon! It was a beautiful building and I often admired its ornate detail, the type you only get with old buildings these days. I guess its age was its downfall, in the most literal sense. |
