I drove an hour and a half to pick this one up. We met in a parking lot. Luckily I had one of those electric outlet adapters for my cigarette lighter. We plugged it in and away it sewed. The needle holder device was off the machine, but in the box. The bobbin case had lost it's tension plate but I had an extra case. I put it all together at home with a needle and it sews pretty well. I need to do something about the tension though. I had to take it up to 9 before the stitches looked good on the back. That's not where it should be. I'm going to try and avoid taking the tension dial apart. I'm afraid if I take it apart, I'll never get it back together again. I can't wait to get it all shiny and new looking. Unfortunately, the carrying case has seen better days and the handle is broken off. Does anyone know if I can buy a replacement for the handle?
This machine makes #9. I swear I can't think of another machine I need or want. That is unless the bargain of the century shows up at my door with another Singer 500a in perfect condition with all the accessories! ------ Visit my blog at http://sewingsaga.blogspot.com

Date: 9/20/10 11:07 PM What a great looking machine! Good luck fixing the tension. Wish I could offer some advice. I know there are diagrams out there for the tension assembly. Whatever happens, enjoy that lovely Morse! |

Date: 9/20/10 11:08 PM Very nice! I like the blue - my favorite color. 9 vintage machines! I am done buying them myself. Keeping my 401A and selling the 15-91 after DH re-wires it and we put it in another cabinet. I want to keep the one it came in as a table in my living room.
Enjoy your Morse! ------ ~Diana~

Can you buy a tension assembly to put on it if you cannot get this one adjusted? Maybe Sew Classic would have it?

Date: 9/20/10 11:19 PM Great looking machine, congratulations!
For the tension, I think you can just take out the center screw and take out the dial (be careful not to lose the small washer behind the dial, I'd hold it with a screw driver before completely removing the dial), and turn the black part that looks like a steering wheel of a ship clockwise a bit, and put the dial and the screw back. |
