If you, like me, have puzzled over this product as a required material in Burda Mag patterns, I noticed in the most recent issue (10/10) that they have started listing it as "Vilene Bias Tape (Stay Tape)". I mean, I always figured that's what it was but I've been tempted to purchase the actual item from UK before. Now I'll just pick up some stay tape! :)

The difference is that the Vilene tape has a chainstitch running down the middle to stabilize the bias tape. It's also fusible. You can buy several kinds of fusible stay tapes online at The Sewing Place The sewing place. It is thinner than most non fusible stay tapes except the nylon one that is available. This does not take to high heat.

Vilene bias tape is not the same as stay tape, as Nancy said. Once I used it, I was instantly hooked! Sewessential.co.uk stocks it in white and charcoal by the meter, and as it's really lightweight, international shipping shouldn't be too bad.

The kind specifically being discussed (and featured in Burda's magazine) is the one with the text "Vilene 12mm wide Bias Tape. White (or Charcoal). An Iron-on Bias cut tape with a run of chain stitches, can be used for strengthening neck and armhole edges and to prevent fabric from stretching."

It's the 3rd or 4th entry on the page.

Thanks to mean ol' Squirrelypoo, I just bought 20 yards. Considering it had to travel from the UK (to Florida, USA) it was really cheap ~ and came really fast!!

Are you kidding me? It took me a gazillion read-overs to make sure I was ordering the right thing!!!

Vilene apparently makes so many different tapes and fusibles that it's REALLY hard to pick through them!!!

I got my order the other day (20 yards) and it came in a teeny-tiny envelope ~ so small that I doubted that I got the correct amount. But yup ... it was correct. Shows you (or me, rather) how light and unobtrusive the stuff is!! Amazing!!!
