Date: 11/21/10 7:06 PM I've been getting an order of Gutermann silk thread together for our coats, and the thread color names are different between two sites even though the numbers are the same (Yale Blue vs Bright Blue, Brilliant Sapphire vs Royal Blue- I might have those mixed up, but you get the general idea). I am just looking at the S303 (machine thread), not comparing the names from the 753 (buttonhole) or any of the polyesters/cottons.
I noticed the charts just have numbers. So do the retailers just assign whatever names? |

Date: 11/21/10 7:57 PM I know in rtw clothes the colors are someting else. like name seabond green
rasberrie blue. Which make you wonder. they must name them. Even it the same color its new to them. ------ Galatians 5:22-23 The Spirit produces love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, humility, and self-control. There is no law against such things as these |

Date: 11/21/10 9:45 PM I remember reading somewhere that there are different names for Gutermann retail threads than for the larger spools sold to sewists and tailoring shops.
I've been trying to find the link, and so far no results. When I get the older computer back from the shop, it should be on that machine, and I'll post it then. In the meantime, just go with the numbers and if you have questions, contact Gutermann, who must get the question pretty often considering the number of threads they sell in a given day, so they really would have to answer you, right? |

Date: 11/21/10 9:50 PM I suspect the retailers are using their own names. In Germany where this thread comes from, it is sold in most stores only by number, not by name. I've also found that when I've tried to replace a spool which I used up from a set (purchased for example at Joann's), I was often unable to find the same number as a replacement. The thread shop in Frankfurt where I often shop told me that some of the colors in sets are discontinued shortly thereafter... ------ Debora, of Chicago and Frankfurt

Date: 11/23/10 0:50 AM I've ordered from the drycleaner supply website, the larger spools of Gutermann. The color chart that you can print out shows * next to some numbers. If I recall, that denotes colors that are seasonal or soon to be discontinued or something. So I found alternate similar colors to order instead. ------ ~Dzynurbrian~

Date: 1/22/13 11:39 PM Hi all, here's a link to Cleaner's Supply so you can request a 'Conversion Chart' for Gutermann threads from small spool/retail numbers to larger spool/German numbers. http://www.cleanersupply.com/advice/article.cfm?articleID=335
If the link doesn't work, go to www.cleanersupply.com, General Information, Articles and Advice, #18, "Are the Gutermann thread numbers universal?"
I hope this helps.
www.wawak.com has 25% off their Mara 100 spools [Jan 2013]--so you get 1,000 meters of this Gutermann thread for $1.86. [MSR $3.10. Wawak & Cleaner's Supply regular price is $2.46.] |

Date: 1/22/13 11:46 PM This is not the only thread company to change or eliminate certain colors.
Why and when, only the manufacturer knows. Maybe the replacements are considered close enough.

Date: 1/30/13 11:31 AM www.stanssewingsupplies.com says "CAUTION: The Gutermann numbering system found on small thread spools, bought in retail stores, do not corrispond to the color numbers found here, which is the wholesale to the trade, numbering system."
Just under that they have a link to a page that lists the color numbers with their corresponding names. I found they don't list all the colors that Wawak and Cleaner's Supply (I was told by Wawak last week that they are sister companies) have on their Gutermann Mara 100 color chart, but it is very helpful that most of them are listed. HTH.
Oh, when you go to stan's sewing supplies, scroll down and go to the box that says Gutermann thread, but make sure to click on the words Gutermann thread, NOT on the color chart. |
