Hello ladies! Now that summer is over for most of you but just beginning here in New Zealand, I was hoping I could get some recommendations for dresses that look good on busty gals.

I am extremely busty, but I don't want to wear anything shapeless because it just makes me look even bigger than my size 22 waistline deserves. I've got quite nice arms and shoulders so I don't mind getting them out, but strapless or halter-neck dresses are out of the question because I can't go braless, and strapless/convertible bras in my size don't exist as far as I know.

I've got heaps of wrap dress patterns, but although they're a flattering shape I invariably have to wear a camisole under them, because either I've got cleavage to my navel or else the wrap goes above my boob rather than under it, which I find unattractive. So I am not looking for a wrap dress pattern for summertime -- I'll keep them for winter when the camisole is a bonus.

Patterns I can easily buy locally or on the internet, with instructions in English, are preferable to something that only comes in a magazine. Can you help me find something nice?

How about Simplicity 2947 Khaliah Ali. There are some nice variations in that pattern- maybe the short sleeve version of the dress would be suitable, cover bra straps and the princess lines in the lower bodice and skirt are slimming.
I will keep digging and see what else catches my eye as like you I have a thicker waist and even with just above average bust but wider shoulders tend to look busty. I will be interested to see what others suggest for patterns too.

Ooh, thanks, that one has potential! I like the versions with the short sleeve (and it would make a pretty top as well as a dress).

I've put on so much weight around my tummy recently that I'm having trouble figuring out what suits me. I know I need to lose weight, but until then I still deserve clothes that look nice. I should only be a 16 but I eat too many crisps :(

I have some more eye candy dresses Lareine,
How about Simplicity 2917, 2647,
Kwik Sew 3839, 3756, 3659. 3658, 3023,
Vogue 8666, 8648, 2900.

I think if you have nice shoulders and arms (lucky you!) some of these may be really nice, particuarly ones with waist definition and fuller skirts without being excessively flared. Lots of people look great in A- line dresses. There are some interesting necklines in there to play with too.
I am itching to order some of these, but am being good... I have a couple of other dresses from Simplicity I ordered earlier to make up and one nice wrap dress from KS that I must make before I indulge further, lol!

I absolutely love my Colete Parfait.

Review

As you can see, I'm extremely large busted as well. There were some sort of rude comments in my review about how they thought it made my bust look bigger. Well, if it did, I didn't care. The pattern is easy, fits a large bust well (No FBA on this for me at all), and it's flattering in my opinion.

I can't wait til Summer next year so I can make another one!

If you have access to Burda's, I really liked this one too but I did do an FBA on it.

I'll see if I can think of more.

If you like knits, I really like McCalls 5484 - its a twist front dress. I do have to do an fba. Unfortunately its out of print.

Butterick 4789 looks similar and still in print.

I also like Vogue 8469 (for wovens). I did have to do an fba on this one too.

That Colette dress is lovely. It looks great on a full bust because it follows your shape well. There is enough fabric where it's needed but it is still fitted. I also have to do a big fba and am always looking for styles that are flattering.

A lot of women have had good luck with the Parfait. Michelle and bellelass have great versions, as does Kim. I love the Crepe. It's only been reviewed here once-- and it looks awesome! I bet the Macaroon and even the Rooibos would work too, if you wanted to look at other Colettes.

You might like Simplicity 4014. cmarie12 has a good review for it. I also like Simplicity 2886. I've been stashing it for ages. Maple Candy had good luck with 2662, but that one may be OOP.

You might want to look at michellep74's reviews. She's busty so you might designs that work for her might work for you. I really like her Parfaits and the Vogues- 1027 and 1194. The 1027 would probably work well for a summer dress. The 1194 has sleeves (easy enough to change).

I also like Butterick 5430. Need to sew it up sometime.

I'd echo crazygrad's recommendations.

I know that you're not crazy about HotPatterns (my go-to pattern brand for being busty), but the Colette pattern drafts are also really good for a large bust and have much better/more detailed instructions.

Both Vogue patterns that she mentioned (1027 and 1194) have good instructions and are flattering on a busty figure. If you find that you get gaping on a wrap-style dress, try making the dress out of a rayon or bamboo knit and then wearing a cotton cami underneath--it'll be cool/lightweight for summer, and you'll barely notice the extra layer.

If you're feeling adventurous and aren't afraid of a magazine pattern w/Italian instructions, La Mia Boutique's plus patterns are often flattering styles for full-busted women. The July issue this past year had 4 or 5 summer knit dresses that would work for you, I think.
