Date: 12/22/10 4:13 PM Has anyone tried the Thread's ebooks? I'd like to get the lining book which is only $10. It would be great if it was readable on my Nook. My nook will view PDF documents, but I'm curious if something will be lost since it's not in color, etc. ------ Cidell

Date: 12/22/10 5:46 PM I have this ebook and I put it on my nook when I saw your post. You do lose something without the color pictures, and most of the images from the pdf do not show up on the nook. You see the picture's caption, but not the picture itself. Hope that helps. |

Date: 12/22/10 7:34 PM Awww Thank you! Mostly thank you for saving me the $10. I guess I could have it on my computer and netbook for when I actually need it.
I wish there were sewing books for the e-book readers. And, since I just bought my Nook, I'm definitely not up for the Nook color yet.
Thank you again!! ------ Cidell

Date: 12/30/10 11:57 AM The ebook issue is interesting because Interweave just sent me an e-article titled Digital Books, Changing How We Read
The interesting part, for me:
Quote: And here’s another insider bit: as we roll out your favorite titles from our backlist, in 2011 and beyond, you’ll find virtually every new Interweave book we print in eBook form as soon as it releases.
I'm an ebook convert even if it's an older hand-me-down model and not the cute new high tech things out there...------ Fashion Maté, where I blog about what I (eventually) sew : http://fashionmate.blogspot.com

Date: 5/2/12 5:06 PM I am resurrecting this thread because I just bought a Nook, and it seems that there are many books on sewing now available for this eReader (and I am sure the others also). Wondering if people have used them and how satisfying they are. And, if they come with patterns in the print version, are those somehow available in the eversion? thx so much! ------ Viking Lily 545

Date: 5/2/12 5:32 PM I bought a really good free motion quilting book for my NOOK to check it out, then after a couple of months I bought that book in paper at JoAnn's with a 50% off coupon....I can have it both ways - the paper has a better size, color and all the illustrations of pattern for quilting, but the NOOK has all the helpful hints, the illustrations in B&W and is quite readable. SO - there are uses for both formats. Both prices together were less than the retail for the paper book. ------ "Be kind whenever possible. It is always possible."

Subject: Threads Ebooks (Nook? Kindle?) Date: 5/2/12 10:47 PM You can read them on your computer too, and print out any pages needed for reference. On your computer you don't lose the color pictures. I picked up the Threads sewing books that I was missing from the Jacket/pant/tshirt/linings, etc. series. -- Edited on 5/2/12 10:48 PM -- ------ Marilyn

Date: 5/3/12 1:55 AM I have a Kindle Keyboard and a iPad. While I don't have the Linings book-- I do have two of Kenneth King's ebooks-- moulage, and birth of a bustier--both are pdfs.
Both tablets have their advantages. The kindle is smaller, and can be stuffed into a coat pocket-- though summer is fast approaching. It's readable in bright sunlight. I have a lighted case, so I can read while walking home in the dark.
The iPad on the other hand, has a well thought out touch interface, is color, and is much faster. Ideally, you should be able to use an ebook as you would a regular book, and flip pages until you see something of interest on the page. I can't do this on my kindle-- it's too slow-- and it takes minutes to do what would take seconds in real life. The iPad is much closer to this ideal.
"Bustier" has many more photographs than "Moulage", which is mostly line art. However, the kindle renders them expertly. They tend to look like old newspaper photos. You probably won't be able to reliably discern the lightest details, such as King's penciled in notations.
Still, the important thing is that you can plop an iPad or a kindle onto your cutting table, and refer back to it as you draft.
I don't have a nook,so I can't comment on the nook's capabilities.
I may be able to photograph the kindle's screen so you can see how it handles greyscale.
