Date: 1/2/11 11:05 AM Anyone using this type of loom to make socks??????
Can any weight wool yarn be used to make socks??? I like a thicker wool sock and sock yarn seems to thin.
Any info will be helpful for this novice knitter, many thanks.

Date: 1/2/11 12:38 PM I looked at the loom and don't think it is a good/efficient way to make socks. It's not automated, you have to manipulate each stitch yourself. That seems slower than knitting from scratch with 11" circular needles or with double-pointed needles. ------ Fabric Purchased in 2011: 37 yards

Date: 1/2/11 5:37 PM Sport weight yarn and 3mm needles are great for bulkier socks that can be worn with boots or clogs. An added advantage is the knitting goes quite quickly compared to fingering weight and size 0. ------ wino |

Date: 1/2/11 6:50 PM I like using the Encore yarn for socks. It works up nicely, fairly thick & washes well. I have tried thinner yarns but I am not crazy about it & I find it snags too...all that work for nothing!
I have wanted to see those looms, but Hobby Lobby sells out as fast as they get them so I do not know what they look like. ------ I am a gal from Kalamazoo.... oh what a gal... smile.... It is in Michigan... la la la ...love that Glen Miller classic!

Date: 1/3/11 0:21 AM Hi Therisa,
Thank you for looking at the loom and giving me your opinion of it and the suggestion to knitting with needles. I haven't used knitting needles since the 70's and not well at it either. Either way I will be a slow knitter. Cheryl ------ BabyLock Quest Plus, Pfaff Creative 7530, Janome 1600P, Kenmore 1030

Thank you for the infomation. Does Joann Fabrics carry Encore brand and how many skeins for a pair of ladies socks will I need.
If you go on ebay and do a search for knitting sock looms you will see many different types of looms and brands.

Date: 1/3/11 8:09 PM It depends on your pattern but roughly 400yds-of course I have big feet! I did take a socks class at my LYS but I really like the "Learn to Knit Socks" booklet American School of Needlework #1273 by Edie Eckman $6.95, All of the patterns are for sport weight yarn and the instructions are easy to follow. It should still be available. One thing-if you buy yarn at your LYS-you can get some help if you get stuck on your project. Good luck! ------ wino |

Date: 1/21/11 1:36 PM So how is this working? I am really thinking of getting one. Our Hobby Lobby sells them as fast they come in & now on back order.
Does everyone still like using them? What about for a bit heavier yarn? It is so cold .... a warmer yarn than the sport yarn would be great for winter socks.
Please post how is it going? ------ I am a gal from Kalamazoo.... oh what a gal... smile.... It is in Michigan... la la la ...love that Glen Miller classic!
