I have a 009 coverstitch that I have had for quite a while and haven't really been able to work it properly. My SM is in the shop, so I thought this would be a good time to spend trying to work out my issues.
I believe I have carefully threaded it properly (and rethreaded). I've checked the diagram carefully in the manual and I think I have it correct. I am using serger thread in the needles and the looper.
I am using Schmetz EL 705 90/14 needles.
I am having trouble with either the right thread breaking shortly after beginning stitching or the stitches just don't form from the beginning.
I've tried adjusting the needles tensions and that didn't help.
Is there anyone that owns this Bernina that can help talk me through this?
I want to try to get help from PR before trying to get help from one of our local Bernina stores. I purchased this machine used from Ebay, so didn't get lessons when it was new and I'm not sure how helpful the local dealer would be with working with me on a used machine. They are not known for being overly freindly in general.
thanks for the help!!

I'm not familiar with your particular machine but when I have had this problem, it has been that the thread was snagging on the cone holder or something else. Alternately, has the machine been serviced? The lack of stitch formation might suggest a timing problem.

Thanks for responding... I've checked all of the threading including the cones and don't see any problems. I've had this machine for a few years but I believe I had it serviced when I first purchased it... I didn't realize at the time that I didn't know how to/ couldn't use it. I've been trying to figure out on my own since then.

I HAD one of these. Never could get it to sew properly. If I held my mouth just so, it would sew several inches. Go try a Janome Coverpro and see if they will give you a trade in. You won't be sorry!

I use Organ JLx2 90/14 on my Bernina 1300MDC for cover and they work great. I couldn't get the Schmetz ones to work as well. Might be worth a try.

Is your 1300 a serger/coverstitch combination?

Are you starting with fabric under the foot? You don't say, so I thought I'd ask, because a CS is not like a serger where you can chain on/off without fabric.

Also, are you threading the needles last? IOW, threading in the proper order?

It isn't you, it isn't the threading or the needle, it is the machine.
I had the very same machine and it did the very same thing yours is doing.
I tried everything that was sugested on PR to get it to sew. Didn't happen.
Very frustrating to say the least.
I got ride of it and bought a BabyLock. I heart my BL.
Easieer to thread, easier to use and no fussing with it to get it to sew.

Wow, this all doesn't sound very encouraging... Wonder if I purchase one of those nonworking berninas off of eBay!
Debbie, yes, I am starting with the fabric underneath and am turning the handwheel counterclockwise to make the first stitch as suggested in the manual. Sounds like I need to work w someone one on one at the bernina shop to see if they can get it to work... If not, then I'll look at getting rid of it. Sometimes I wonder about Bernina...
