Date: 2/21/11 8:58 AM I have been watching the PBS series Downton Abbey. It is set in 1912 England in a lord's home. The Edwardian clothing is absolutely gorgeous. So if you are to be switching channels and happen upon it, stop for a while to gaze. ------ Sewing: A creative mess is better than tidy idleness. ~Author Unknown

Date: 2/21/11 9:02 AM Oooh, thanks for the tip, Sharon. I don't get television at my house (only Netflix streaming) but I will add it to my list for when it comes out on DVD or streaming. The Edwardian period is my absolute favorite for drool-worthy fashion. ------ Heather in Baltimore |

Date: 2/22/11 12:40 PM The entire series/video is posted on the PBS station. They are filming additional chapters in the UK in March since the program was such a hit.

Date: 2/22/11 1:47 PM more importantly, though, is where does one find pattern inspiration for some of these looks? not the exaggerated S-shape that maggie smith's character is after, but the looks of some of the younger girls (lady mary in particular)...
NB - one of the best things about the costuming of downton is how they expressed, through costume, the age brackets of all of the women, from the s-shape of lady violet down to the bloomers of the youngest daughter. ------ puu

Date: 2/22/11 4:11 PM I can't believe that you guys in the US have got Downtown Abbey already and we've only just got it north of the border (Scotland)! Thank heavens for the internet and illegal downloads of good US TV to make up for it.
I would love an Edwardian corset though! |

I purchased some books from Amazon because I was digging Downton Abbey so much. There might be one pattern book I stumbled across that tells you how to draft. But, if you want inspirational photos, the old Sears catalogs on Amazon are great.------ Cidell

Date: 3/17/12 7:30 AM I recently sewed my version of the magnificent burgundy coatLady Mary wore when she confessed her secret to her then fiance Sir Richard and asked him to keep the scandal out of his newspapers. Here's the link to my review. ------ The essence of life is statistical improbability on a colossal scale.
