I could possibly get this machine as my husband business is going out of business. They rarely used it but have for various things so I know it works. I'd consider it because I could make a boat cover, cushions and the like ...canvas, sunbrella and felt backed vinyl...
any thoughts on this macnie. It has the motor under the table.

Is this the machine your looking at? It looks like it would be a good machine.

I'm off on a trip, but I can quickly tell you that I got a 211G165 off CL for $200 earlier this year and I really really like it. It's pretty beat up in appearance but sews very nicely. Standard industrial motor on mine. The 166 should have reverse, which the 165 doesn't and which would be nice to have. I may be moving, but I'm thinking of keeping this machine and hauling it 1100 miles, for just the kind of tasks you mention. Good luck!

Skae: thanks for posting the picture...yes I do think it looks like that.
Sorry I was off for a few day! Busy with the out of business sale. Thanks for the info, guys. I'll make sure we "make" room for it. I'm not really thrilled with making a boat cover but I figure to get this machine it will be worth it. Just so he doesn't tell his boating friends...I think one boat cover will be enough!

Ripple:Happy moving! Sounds like you got a very good deal...

Don't pay too much for it. It's not a self-oiling macnine, which limits its attractiveness: there are two dozen or so points that are supposed to be lubricated on a daily basis. A service manual is available here: http://parts.singerco.com/IPsvcManuals/211G165_166_265_266.pdf
which will show you were to oil and how to thread and do normal work.

dscheidt: Oh thanks so much for this tip, a very good thing to know and for the link too.
I'm getting it for "free" although I did do their books for them ...so I told them I'd take that as trade.
