Making a buttonhole Singer just emailed me the how-to's!

I have a used Singer 6211. . .nice and strong and smooth all-metal machine with only a straight and zigzag stitch. I had no idea how to get a buttonhole from that. . .but figured that ladies sewing back in 1984 would have needed buttonholes, too. I emailed Singer and they sent me step-by-step instructions! What great support. . .for a used machine, at that.

I have a 6235 that has seen constant use since it was new. It is my daily use machine even though I have other computerized machines. I found a never used one on that auction site a couple of years ago and bought it just in case Singer ever runs out of the rare part it never needs! The new one runs like a dream even though it had '0' maintenance in it's life. I'm glad to hear a good report of a company caring about customer satisfaction. A rarity these days it seems. I am not machine-savvy yet, I wouldn't want to claim, but I knew it was a good machine from the get-go (like you can say about a house: good bones). It's just so incredibly solid, runs so smooth like silk, and stitches so tightly and evenly. Simple but precise. I am trying to get another, too.

The worst ones will have yellowed plastic if they were exposed to smoke or sun so you can kind of tell how it was cared for. I don't know about yours but mine has the nicest bobbin side stitch of any machine I own (and there are more than a few). I didn't know how to express what I meant in another way. It really doesn't seem too long ago to me, but in terms of technology (both in sewing machines as well as everything else) it is a "long time" ago - - things have come so far. I had to tell my kids that DVD's didn't even exist when I was young, or CD's either. We had the LP's and a record player! Rotary phones and super-long cords (no cordless), typewriters and then (!) word processors. . . But yes, now reading my words another way, I'm with you all!

I made many of those in my day. I still do it every now and then when the "automatic" buttonhole thingy just isn't going to get the job done.

But what you do with the zigzag to create a buttonhole is, in effect, what is called a 4-step buttonhole on other machines that have that actual stitch pattern. Just so long as I don't have to make them by hand!

There is a Citi bank commercial in the beginning and she has an computerized Viking, but she does use just the zig zag for the button hole. You have to cut and paste. Either my husband has our computer set up a certain way and won't change it, or our security settings are set up a certain way and he still won't change it.
