I currently use a Singer 758. I know that my model has the nylon gears in it and I really want to get a Touch and Sew that has all metal gears. I have used other machines before and I still like the setup of my Touch and Sew. I know that the 600 and 603 have metal gears, however I also heard that the early 620s did as well. Is this true? As far as problems go, would you recommend the 600 or the 620 with metal gears. I know that in the 620 they introduced the new bobbin winder system. Thank You

I have a Singer 626 (the pink one) and have had it since 1974; I bought it when it was 10 years old. That machine has traversed the US four times; literally from coast to coast. Once it fell off an airplane conveyor belt. And I still use it.

I can only believe that with all its trials, the machine has metal gears. And as to the "new bobbin winder system being introduced on the 620", if what you are saying is the wind in place bobbin, which Touch and Sews are known for, it was also on the 600.

Edited to add: I have a 778 which also has nylon gears like your 758. My review is here That machine is very quiet compared to my 626, so there are some tradeoffs.

I have a 603e with the same bobbin winding system as your 758. It has been a reliable machine, but I much prefer my 401 and 503, which are both also slant needle machines.

What do you prefer on the 401a and and 503 when compared to the 603?

They feel more substantial to me, a bit more powerful.

The stitches are easier to change on the 401, the 603 I have to open up and change the cams.

I also prefer the size 66 bobbins for the 401 and 503; they hold more thread and the bobbin and bobbin threading mechanism for the 603 makes it more prone to snarls if the bobbin isn't exactly right. The 603 is more temperamental. It makes a beautiful satin stitch though, it beats the 401 hands-down on that. But how often do I use that?

Does your 603 and the 600 have the timing belt on it, or is it like the 401 and it doesn't have one?

When I was looking at possibly purchasing a Touch and Sew, I believe I recall reading that the 600 through 604 series are all metal gears. but I may be remembering incorrectly.

No. That was about the time Singer had done some serious thinking to stay in the market and decided to use the nylon gears, as well as the rubber feed dogs.
