I'm getting ready to cut Butterick 5555 in the dress. I bought a very pretty cotton/silk voile but it's quite sheer and I want to underline the bodice and skirt with a cotton broadcloth. I've never done this before and I'm not sure if it will work. Should I use a different fabric for the underlining? Thanks for any help!

Underlining is pretty easy to do. Probably you want a cotton batiste in white or off white. Sawyer Brooks usually carries it. Cotton broad cloth will be too stiff.

I've interlined a linen tunic and a lightweight lawn dress with this cotton batiste from Vogue Fabrics. It's super soft and easy to work with. I love how it feals against my skin. My method was just to cut the body pieces, front and back from both the fashion fabric and the bastiste, if there are darts, sew these in each fabric individually, then baste the fabrics together, wrong sides facing and treat them as one for the remainder of the construction.

I'm bumping this becasue I just fell head over heels for a beautiful cotton voile. I need a dress for an event and had New Look 6002 in mind, but voile strictly speaking is a little too light and drapy for this. I think batiste would not give me the structure needed. What if I underlined with broadcloth? Or even something like a sateen? would I still also line the dress? Probably I'd want to wear Spanx under it and I like a Bemberg lining.

This might be a little late, but I've made two dresses with voile underlined with broadcloth, both for the pattern simplicity 1803 and they are turned out wonderfully =] I was worried about the weight of the broadcloth with the voile but the voile kinda sticks to the broadcloth and yea, works well for me, the voile hasn't stretched out and the colour looks gorgeous with the broadcloth as a background
