Hi-I sewed everything many years ago--bridesmaid dresses, etc. Came back to sewing now, 40 years later. SO MUCH TO LEARN!! Here's what happened recently, though, and maybe someone will identify--I used to put lapped zippers in all the time. Thought I would look up some tutorials to refresh my memory, or to see what new techniques there were. None of it made sense to me-not the zipper package, blog posts, or the excellent and clear video tutorials. There were so many ways to approach things, and I just couldn't get it right. Then I thought "Well how in the world did I used to do it easily?" "I guess I just did what it said in the pattern." So, I looked at my Simplicity pattern, did what it said, and had a nice lapped zipper completed in 20 minutes. I am learning so much from this site and it's my No 1 favorite. But I was over-researching something that already worked. I have read so much good info on here, I am almost paralyzed by the idea that I have to do things the "right" way. Anybody relate?

Yes I can relate. We are living in a "new age"...it's called TMI=Too Much Information...

Same thing happened to me when I started back into garment sewing about 2 years ago.
I also had to stop and think about how I use to do things and came to the same conclusion that you did. I just follow the pattern instructions. After two years and a number of wadders I have branched out a little bit. Mostly because I don't like facings and would rather use bindings.

I have learned a tremendous amount of new information from all the various sites abounding around in webworld (this, after returning to sewing last year following a 20-year absence from fashion sewing).

But I have to say that what I've learned that works is mostly about fitting at the pattern level (which I never bothered to do before - I just adjusted on the body) and correcting formerly lazy habits.

So many other techniques though, are what I learned under my Mother's guidance, and those simple, 'old-fashioned' techniques still serve me very well

I just did the same thing! I was taught to sew by my Grandmother(who also taught my mother) so most of my techniques are quite old. I've been trying to upgrade them, so when I just did a lap zipper I looked up the instructions in a book. Found it was twice the sewing for the same result! I went ahead and did it the way I was taught

I do try to read the tutes I come across or research a method, if I haven't used it in a while..just to see what's new and if a better way has been found. I should probably practice more as I often find myself reverting to what I was taught.

Thank you for posting this!!! I also hadn't sewn for awhile and was stunned at the amount of info out there! The problem is I could probably do a perfectly fine job without reading everything first and trying to get as much info as I can keeps me from actually making something! Kind of a catch22! I do love seeing blogs with the creations people have made, I'm a very visual (vs. reading) learner, but I just cannot keep up... friends follow several sewers blogs, I don't know how they do it and get done all they do. I have been rewatching videos I had gotten long ago and recordings of the free webcasts Silhouette Patterns has been doing or samples of the Sandra Betzina recordings on her site and count it as time I'd have spent watching something on tv, but TMI - just keeps us (me) from getting something done!!!

There are some bright and talented people in blog/tutorial land... and it has been taking away some of my time for actual sewing. I need to cut back on the number of blogs that I follow! But I love being able to research techniques. (and inspiration)

I agree totally! I used to be able to sew whatever I wanted to with no problem. I went to the fabric store, got pattern, fabric and notions and went home and sewed. Nothing seemed to hard or scary! I spent many years not sewing due to raising 4 girls. School, soccer, etc. kept me busy. Then started sewing again and reading sewing sites and found out about all the sewing rules and everything I didn't know. Talk about being to scared to sew. LOL. TMI is exactly the reason. I think I will just stick with what I know and start actually sewing again.
Sewing for me is a fun, creative activity. Now it seems to be all about perfection. And always worrying about being perfect is not fun.
