Date: 6/21/11 2:41 AM I listened to an interview with David Gillespie, the author of 'Sweet Poison' on the radio a couple of weeks ago. It all made sense to me and I decided to cut out sugar to see how I would go. I'd like to lose a few kilos, and improving my health along the way can't be a bad thing either.
It's Day 11 of the sugar free life and I am feeling the pinch. I'm not sure if I am craving or just plain hungry, as food without sugar does not have nearly the appeal it used to have. I'm not counting calories or cutting back on anything (within reason), but seem to naturally want to eat less if i can't have a sweet snack. I just went up the street to cruise the food shops and ended up eating sushi and sashimi after looking at a lot of forbidden stuff. A victory I guess, but i still feel like something a bit more indulgent. Anyone know any fructose free treats they can recommend?

Date: 6/21/11 2:49 AM I avoid sugar too. I have been doing this successfully for over a year and a half. I have become very sensitive to the sweetness in veggies. Certain (especially cooked) veggies are very sweet and can hit the spot. You have to be off sugar for awhile to get adjusted and lose the cravings. Hang in there it is totally worth it. Day 11 is tough! Just keep going. Day 365 and you will be a new woman. |

I've noticed already. I had a cob of corn for lunch, closed my eyes and pretended it was cheesecake. Just as sweet!
Sheer desperation is making me inventive. Just sitting down with a cup of hot milk laced with cinnamon and an pinch of stevia. Yum! I think I'm about to get hooked on cinnamon... ------ Taking in is happier than letting out.

Date: 6/21/11 6:07 AM Are you saying you aren't eating naturally occurring fructose, or just added processed sugars? If you aren't eating fruit, you are missing out on a lot of good nutrients. Don't throw out the baby with the bath water, as the old expression goes.
I know someone who makes a jello with orange juice; it's actually pretty good. How about baked fruit. Roasted root vegetables (a little olive oil, rosemary, salt, pepper) are delicious.

Date: 6/21/11 7:51 AM All carbs convert to glucose....that's your body fuel. Table sugar (sucrose) gets converted to glucose in the body. So does (fructose) fruit.
Milk is lactose....another form of sugar.
Your body can't make a moral judgement about one form of sugar over another. It makes sense to cut back on empty foods nutritionally, but the sugar factor can't be lumped into just sweets.
Yes, rice is like eating heaps of sugar.
Sugar is one of the most misunderstood topics in nutrition. I don't believe the hype...selling books. |

Date: 6/21/11 8:38 AM Hype is right. Cutting out processed sugars and useless calories is a good idea: cakes, cookies, pastries, etc. You can't avoid natural sugars if you are eating a well balanced diet. ------ Sewing: A creative mess is better than tidy idleness. ~Author Unknown

Date: 6/21/11 9:12 AM Like others, I am curious whether your sugar elimination plan includes the sugars that occur in various foods, such as fruits and grains etc. There's a difference between refined sugars and what occurs naturally, not to mention the other nutrients in those foods.
