coverstitch.. brother or janome
glenj AUSTRALIA Member since 1/6/08 Posts: 802	Login to reply to this post Like this post Date: 7/28/11 7:28 PM hi all feedback would be appreciated.I am at the stage of biting the bullet and buying a coverstitch machine. not sure which one as I don't have one to actually try out.4 dealers within 30 min drive ,non with cover machine. Like the idea of small size of brother and the foot starting back a bit,as the coverpro seems to have to have the foot right at the edge,and is a bigger looking machine. Has the extra harp space on janome worth it. I will probably only use it for binding and hemming. if anyone has tried both,what did you find pro/con about both. Thanks in advance

Both machines have their pros and cons so I think it comes down to what matters most to you. Personally I own and prefer the Brother, because skipped stitches (or lack of) is my number one priority. My second priority is the presser feet available. You need to work out what is most important to you. Debbie Cook has a good comparison chart which may help. Comparison Chart Edited to add: I've had my Brother seven years and only wished for the extra harp space four or five times. I've never had a problem with skipped stitches (although I know others have). I use the freearm, but could manage easily without it. The extension table is useful - it takes the weight of the garment which is great for drapey, stretchy knits. With the extension table on, the foot is well back from the edge of the machine and gives a large flat area to work on. image from Gur.co.uk I use generic binders which work well - the Janome feet/binders are expensive. I've never had the opportunity to use the Brother, unfortunately, but hear nothing but good things from those who own one. It's a shame you can't get to try them both before you make a decision. ------ chris Melbourne

I was hoping you would,as I knew you had the brother and it was wonderful to know that the lack of harp space was no biggie.knowing you've had it for 7 years without issue is great. the whole freearm thing is not an issue,i never bother to use one on a sewing machine,and never needed one on my overlocker. Nice to know about the skipped stitches, that would drive me nuts.Although it would be interesting to know if the 1000cpx still skips.

I would dearly love to be able to try a cover stitch out ,cause I go by feel on so many things but in this instance I will be trusting the advice of people who are using them on a regular basis. That's not so bad By the way do the binders work well? which are better,

I really like it. This machine was in storage for 6 years never been used by the former owner. After she gave it to me, I plugged it in, started sewing and it was like it was never dormant! No skipped stitches. I have used the free arm alot as I was hemming existing hems on pants. I do like the extra harp space, makes me feel like it's more like a sewing machine. Yes to all of the above. I've made a lot of swim, dance and gym wear with my machine. One of the advantages of the Brother is I can use stretch needles, which help a lot with high Lycra fabrics and the skipped stitch issues.
