The more I see the wonderful benefits of leather... particularity the not having to finish the edges... what other materials are like that?

Now I guess a follow up question... is there any super cheap material that would be like working with leather without the expense of leather. In other words I'm trying to find a material that I could practice/simulate working on leather without having to experiment and learn on expensive leather hides.
