Friend's dog is having a problem with storms Need info from previous thread

She already gives the dog Rescue Remedy, but she needs something with a quick response. I recall somewhere on here the discussion was around making a t-shirt sort of cover for a dog, to make it feel more comfortable during a thunderstorm. Yes, the meds can take a while to take effect.. So she should not wait until the last minute to give those to the dog..

It is more than the thunder...I know they sense the barometer dropping and can "feel" the lightening too. Actually the fear is very logical...we are the stupid ones. Our Katie(beloved German Shepherd) wanted in one day...she never wants in...she calmly walked over to the dining room table...went under it and lied down. ...OK, she has NEVER gone under a table before. She looked at us like we were idiots. 30 seconds later a huge lightning bolt hit a giant Ponderosa Pine off our deck....there was the smell of fire and bits of tree were found way up on the roof and quite a ways from the house. Katie got up and went back outside as cool as a cucumber...giving us an"I told you so " look as she went out.. ------ "The problem is not that there are problems. I was very interested in that in regard to a nephew and found that for people there is a formula based on body weight. It might be worth reading about, for a small dog, one could probably experiment with a heavy folded towel at first to see if that helps. If you and your friend think that a weighted blanket might be helpful, I would fill it with felted wool or something other than the beads/pellets that are recommended for fear that the dog might eventually gnaw through to those. All though our rescue dog needed to have a relationship with his crate for a while, our other dog never did. He often chose the crate out of empathy for the rescue dog. However, Blackie made me realize that he needed something other than the hard floor to lay on as he got older since his favortie spot was in the dirty laundry basket. So, we got a lovely wicker laundry basket that we kept lined for him. Perhaps your friend could have a nice lined basket that would fit in her lap. She could place the frightened pup in the basket (maybe with the weighted blanket) on her lap. Idea would be to wean from her lap to her side, to her feet, etc. ------ I have no idea what Apple thought I was saying so be a Peach and credit anything bizarre to auto correct.

You could probably make something like it but it does need to be sturdy and snug. I don't think regular t-shirt material would work. Ours is quite thicker. But it basically wraps the dogs up like a sausage. My mom told me it was desgned by Temple Grandin. They work for other anxious situations too like vet trips, traveling, nail clipping! ------ http://kimsewsilly.blogspot.com/

I have no experience with it, but noticed them at my groomer/boarder the other day. If it works, it is worth the $$ IMHO

A co-worker was just telling me yesterday that she got two thundershirts for her two cocker spaniels and they worked to calm the dogs down as soon as she put them on them. ------ Sewing is my therapy!
