HI; We both are taking the u 500 insulin concentrate now. DH is still having high sugars & mine have become irratic. I am either high or super low. Lows frequently during the night & sometimes 3 or 4 times a night even though I drink drink juice, have crackers, have fruit........... It is leaving me very tired & bringing on resurgence of the stupid migraines! SIGH! ....

Please do not suggest Vegan or Vegetarian diet I have heard enough of that from SIL. ........ no offense to anyone of course! I personally do NOT believe it would "cure" diabetes.

If you take this insulin how do you keep stable blood sugars? I go again in 2 weeks for diabetic management it is getting through the 3 month intervals is hard & tiring.
Thank you for helping!

Hrm. Sounds like you might not be getting enough starchy foods and protein. Would you please post a "typical" day's diet? -- With some info, I'm sure we can help you get on track and stop having migraines!

Also -- are you drinking any diet sodas? Some people (though certainly not all) sometimes have a reaction that could cause swinging blood sugars. Also, are you type one, type two insulin dependent or????

Thank you for replying!

I am insulin dependent type 2 diabetic. My brother is type 1, my Dad was type 1, Mom is type 2 controlled with pills. My sister so far is not diabetic....... horray! Diabetes thoughout Dad's family.

I do like diet soda..... mostly Diet caffiene free Coke, or Diet 7 up. I usually have cereal with skim milk in AM, with a cup or 2 of coffee. Lunch time soup with crackers & a fruit. Supper varies as this is DH & I meal together. Usually have pasta, salad, or meat, veggie & rice. Fruit for snack or if low graham crackers as juice or real 7 up if imeter reads LOW . ........Weekends we have bigger meal at lunch time & small meal at supper according to DH work schedule. Lately with this heat wave we have much ice tea too.

I kinda give up on the migraines, just hope they do not start coming 3 & 4 times a week again.......UGH! I figure once a week is a good week for me.

(I take blood thinners so have to be a bit careful with greens & like that. Stupid circulatory problems! )

Thanks everyone for helping me. ....... I think this whole blood sugar thing is interfering with my sewing! No energy & not feel well.

What kind of eating plan has your doctor told you to go by? There are so many now a days. Some help and some do not. I would ask and see what he/she thinks would be best for you and see how you feel after a week or two on it.

My doctor wanted me to have the standard balanced diet. Only problem was I gained weight on it. I went to low carbs and honestly, I have not felt this good in years. At least discuss this with the doctor.

Read the book Protein Power. You will learn that pastas, breads, rice and most of what you say you are eating are sugars to the body and not helping you fight the battle. Kitty, my dear, I am concerned about you and only want to help.

Thank you LTS. I will see if the book is in the library.
My doctor told me to eat whatever I want! He says all the old talk about limiting carbs is bunk now! ????? So since this new insulin I do eat as described above. ........... I love soup ...yes even in summer we are both love soup! .......... I have been eating mostly Cheerios as dietician said it is good for cholesterol........ not a big fan of Oatmeal......
Thanks again!

I googled U500 insulin and that is some potent stuff. I'm not diabetic but I do know low blood sugars, especially in the middle of the night, can be dangerous. I think you should contact your doctor or diabetes educator NOW with your blood sugar readings in hand and tell them about your concerns. Medical treatment is supposed to make you feel better not worse.

Also are you accurately accounting for your carbs in your insulin dose? My daughter has a friend (teenager) who is type 1 diabetic and her father (a cardiologist BTW) told me, "Megan can eat anything she wants as she knows how to adjust her insulin". I realize it's often more complicated with Type 2 diabetes because their bodies produce some insulin but I would think you would need to have a fairly accurate idea how many carbs you're consuming.

Maybe Dresscode will chime in (anyone able to PM her? I can't). She's a Type 1 diabetic and seems quite knowledgeable and sensible about insulin, food and diabetes

Wow, that is pretty scary to think your *doctor* said that. There are lots of studies (old and new) about carbs and one thing is indisputable - simple carbs (rice, bread, pasta, etc.) trigger an immediate insulin response. So, of course a diabetic (Type 1 or 2) has to monitor everything they eat, especially simple carbs.

This is a serious situation for you, esp. based on your histories. I second the suggestion to seek immediate medical advice, and even maybe a different doctor who is more educated about diabetes and nutrition.

Cholesterol levels are not the whole story for heart and insulin health. Plus, Cheerios (and oats) are a carb. Read the book that LTS recommended above, Protein Power. Arm yourself with information before your next meeting with the dietitian.
