I'm looking for suggestions on good sewing machine dealers, preferably in Manhattan. My daughter wants/needs a machine, she'd like my old Pfaff, but I'm thinking of just buying her a new machine (I kind of want to just keep it )

I'll be there this coming weekend, just looking to see if anyone there has any wonderful suggestions.

I'm more of a "buy what I want NOW" kind of person, rather than taking time to hunt down an old machine, do craigslist (ugh)...etc.

I just want to find a great supportive store and go from there.

Thanks for any help and suggestions. She is not a beginner sewer.

She lives right near this store, Crown Sewing Machine.

Has anyone ever been there?

STAY AWAY FROM CROWN.

let me amend that...you can buy a machine from them but do no under any circumstances allow them to fix or even tune up your machine...

Sarah, thanks for the amendment to your post. I was going to ask if you have any other suggestions for places to check.

Do you?

Anyone?

I took a class at Sew Right Sewing Machines in Queens and they are a really nice dealer with good prices and service.Sew Right sewing Machines I assume that she can get there by bus from Manhattan. There is also a Pffaf dealer around the corner from them.

The sewing machine guy I adore moved to deepest Brooklyn ( Garment Center Sewing) he is a brilliant repairman, charges fair prices and is honest...you can infer that this was not true at Crown.

he sells low end machines and used machines that he has worked on. my problem is that I no longer have the wrist strenght top schlep my machine on the subway and the cab fare will be about $50 each way from my neighborhood...so I have not been using the brilliant leon. i think that he will sometimes show up in the garmet district to do pick up and deliveries...
But if Leon sels you a machine he will take care of it...and will stand behind it.

I bought my machine on overstock.. a janome and I lurve it.

There is a Pfaff place in queens...but that is FAAAAAR from my house. The Sew Fast Sew Easy lady in midtown sells machines but I wouldn't buy a postage stamp from her, let alone a machine.

I think that you won't get the sort of sewing machine store support one gets in other places...there are many repair places in the garment district... i don't know them so can't say antyhing useful about them///You may want to call someone at FIT and see if anyone there can give you a recomendation...it may take being bounced around in voicemail land until you get the person who can help you.

Thanks for all the replies. I'll check out some of these. I think I saw the store Nancy mentioned already, and someone else PM'd me about that, plus has a machine she wants to sell. Sarah, you are right, it's the "schleping" part that is difficult, hence me not bringing my old weighs a ton machine to her on the plane.

It's a long hard trip there to sew rite... subways and then busses. My inlaws used to live in a slightly more accessable part of Queens and it was 90 minutes door to door, two subways and a bus..or a $60 car service fare.

I would call garment center sewing to see when he is in Manhattan

I'd like to jump this thread back to the top. I am having issues knowing who to buy from. I can't find a Juki dealer who has machines I can try. And there is only one Pfaff dealer --no idea if I can try them--and they are the ones mentioned in previous posts to avoid at all costs.

Dealers
City Quilter- Bernina's (can test them)
City Sewing- Bernina's and Juki's (can't test them)
Crown Repairs - Pfaff (?)

So, I'm feeling like I'm getting a Bernina or a Bernina from City Quilter, but I'd really like some options! The idea of two subways or car service to get my machine serviced is not appealing. If you buy from an authorized dealer can you bring to any authorized dealer to repair and service?

Thanks a bunch!!
