Use it or lose it fabric, money, weight

My DD's complained the stash smelled. So I sat in chair in basement while they pulled out fabric for keep or give away. They were brutal just like on tv shows that used to be on about clutter and what's important (as opposed to the new shows about people who live in waist high trash in the kitchen!). So I was so good.... Then they found mold. I am not talking al little bit on the outide, but honking great clumps. I had to throw away .... 70 garbage bags of fabric! We don't know why it was so bad, since we had had no leaks, no disasters since I last fondled it, but it was horrible both the smell and the loss of fabrics I loved and even DD's were upset that some of the fabric they loved was destroyed. I am sick, not just for the fabrics I loved having to be thrown out, but also for the fact that 70 bags of fabric could have been donated to several causes, and that if I had given this to worthy causes a few months ago, I wouldn't have had to get a dumpster to take away the 70 bags + boxes. I have vowed NO MORE FABRIC BOUGHT JUST BECAUSE IT WAS A GOOD DEAL, or I wanted to get my moneys worth for the free shipping. My DH was sweet, he told be to just say goodby to the old and buy new fabrics ... but only if I really meant to use them and loved them and/or my children wanted an item out of that specific fabric! I don't want to think of the money involved in doing this, but we have to do something with the basement now, tear out the paneling, get the basement waterproofed and refinished. This is by way of a warning to all of you who have fabric in plastic totes.... they don't always do a good job if even a little moisture gets on one piece of fabric. Talk about a bad apple spoiling the barrel! ------ JanieV

How horrible for you..I also keep my fabric in plastic totes and have had water heater and plumbing problems in the last several months. I'll go through the totes and the closet I haven't touched lately. And you can get more fabric. It must have been a fluke that the mold got into your containers like that. ------ Marilyn January 2009 to January 2010 81 yards out and 71yards in January 2010 to the present 106.7 yards out and 146.5 yards in. That was my intention this weekend, to go through my fabric stash that's stored in plastic bins in the garage but I did not get to that project. I remember members saying in another thread that silver fish, etc. can also 'appear'. It will be a priority this week--thanks for the push.

Your post has really given me food for thought about buying fabric; I need to be more disciplined in that area. I hope your mold eradication goes smoothly.
