Date: 10/11/11 7:31 PM I want to order some gingham from Farmhouse Fabrics - anyone have any thoughts on what size gingham?
I think my daughter preferred the light blue gingham...thoughts?

Date: 10/11/11 7:47 PM If my memory serves me right, which it won't do at times, I believe the squares were very large; like about 3/4" or so. But the site doesn't show this large square; 3/16" is the largest, so I'd go with that.
I used to have a gingham shirt with 1" squares, but that was a looooong time ago! ------ "We don't impose our rhythm on Nature. The key is to respect and live within Her." Jean-Charles Boisset, Winemaker

Date: 10/11/11 7:58 PM Thank you, Miss Fairchild...if it makes any difference, this is just for dress-up/trick-or-treating, and not for theater.
I am planning on using this pattern: http://childrenscornerstore.com/louise.html
as opposed to an actual Dorothy costume pattern because it matches the AG doll dress I bought on Etsy: http://img1.etsystatic.com/il_570xN.242590225.jpg
And, OF COURSE, it has to match (!!) |

Date: 10/11/11 8:03 PM In the original drawings in the book the squares look pretty large, maybe 1". In the movie they are smaller, closer to 1/4". Light blue.

Date: 10/11/11 9:18 PM My daughter (6) is only familiar with the books - she has read about 7 or 8 in the series now. It was a hard sell to convince her that most people would recognize Dorothy with RED shoes, not silver (like in the book). Large scale gingham would probably be fine with her.
My first thought was to do the Simplicity costume that others have done so beautifully, but I psyched myself out of that. Then I thought just an "homage" would be okay - gingham elastic waist skirt (nice and full with white lining), white Peter Pan collar blouse (Oliver+S music class blouse) and red shoes. Now she seems to have glommed onto dressing more like her doll's outfit...which she certainly won't be going trick-or-treating with...hmm...maybe I can coax her back over to making my life less stressful. ;-)

Date: 10/12/11 6:03 AM I think it depends on the size of the child. I've made 2 Dorothy's. One when my daughter was about 5 and I believe I used 1/2". Last year I made another one for my 2 year old GD and used 1/4". I would only use the 1" for an adult size. ------ Singer 66-16. Date: 10/13/11 8:26 PM I ended up getting a poly/cotton blend from Joann's - 1/4"
The choices were 1/4", 3/16" and a micro check. The 3/16" looked to be the right size for a doll's dress. I thought the 1/4" would read well on a larger garment, and at night.
Thanks for all the input! |
