I was gifted with (free!) a wonderful Kenmore 158. What a smooth-as-silk tank! So, do I need only Kenmore needles or can I use my Schmetz universals? Thanks!

You can use 130/705H needle system needles.

You can use all the home sewing machine needles of the size mentioned in the previous post. Janome makes the Kenmore needles, and Organ makes the Janomes and Kenmore needles!SO - you can use at least in part: Klasse, Organ, Janome, Kenmore, Schmetz, and some others out there. And, despite some opinions, you can use Singer needles as they are the same size - some people do not use them in other than Singer machines, but I have used them in Kenmore, Janomes and when pushed - in my Pfaff. I love that the Singers are color coded, though some other of these brands do some color coding as well.
