Date: 11/5/11 8:58 AM Has anyone taken a quilting class online, and if so, was it easy to follow and did you learn enough that you feel it was worth taking? I can piece, but other than stitch in the ditch, haven't actually "quilted". I've got 4 tops but they need that done. I know it's a practice makes perfect thing, but all my (few) tries at it are still pretty bad. I need help! |

 1 member likes this. I checked out all the quilting videos I could find on youtube for free. There are some EXCELLENT videos on there!
So far I really love the Missouri Quilt Co videos. They break things down into steps, or they just show the coolest ways to do things. I am fascinated by the tube quilting! ------

Date: 11/5/11 11:12 AM I just got an email from "Craftsy" with a special deal on a free motion class online with videos. Looked pretty good for the price of $29 approximately on sale, and you can access it for as long as it stays on the web...hopefully forever. 
HOWEVER, I have to say that with all the free videos out there why do that? Just a few sites that have them: Sewing With Nancy's online videos, Leah Day's Free Motion Quilting Project - I love this one!! And then of course You Tube, but You Tube doesn't have a good flow - you have to always root around to see the next video. And there must be lots more free stuff, but believe me the Leah Day site will occupy a person for a very long time. ------

Date: 11/5/11 11:24 AM If you want something more formal than what you can get on youtube or some of the other websites already mentioned, check out Quilt University. There are some machine quilting classes that are taught by Carol Miller (who happens to be the person that created Quilt University). I have not taken that class, but have taken a couple of others on the site and they were worth my money. You get access to the class via a password and there are forums so you can ask the instructor questions.

I have taken Carol Miller's Machine Quilting class at Quilt University and would highly recommend it.------

Date: 11/6/11 8:09 PM There is also a FM quilt class at Fabric dot com. I too have taken Carol Miller's Class on Quilt University. It was fine, but sometimes the directions weren't clear and when I tried to do something, she went ahead. ------

Date: 11/11/11 11:36 AM I joined Sharon Schamber's website. It was a bit pricey, but I've learned so much from her instructional videos there. When I was just starting out, I got a bunch of the printed quilt panels for kids, made up the quilt sandwiches, and then quilted them using the 4 practice shapes that Sharon recommended be used to practice at first. I donated those to our quilt guild's Quilts for Kids project (quilts supplied for the police's car trunks and the firemen's trucks, and to the schools, for kids that have had bad stuff happen). Then I got tops from my quilt guild's Quilts for Heroes project (red white and blue quilts given to wounded military in our area) and did the same on those. After doing hours of those shapes, I was ready to take off and try a lot of the designs she used in her quilts as background filler (there were at least 99 different ones in one of her quilts), and do free-hand feathers. It's weird--I can do lots of lovely things, but cannot do regular stippling to save myself.
Anyway, do try an online class, and practice a lot. :) ------

Date: 11/15/11 10:09 AM I took Pictorial Quilting from Wendy Butler Burns on Craftsy. It was excellent - very thorough, she answered all questions quickly.
The project we made was cute, and I made it using stash supplies, and the technique is one I'll be able to apply to my own projects.
It was well worth the discounted $30. I don't think I would have wanted to pay sixty for it. |

Date: 12/1/11 3:13 PM I took this course and started out not knowing anything about quilting or ever quiliting in my life. During the course I was able to make a quilted tote bag and am now in the middle of making my first quilt and because of the course I have to say it is coming out beautiful.
It was the best money I've spent on any lesson and well worth it. i am going to take the second series. |
