Bobbin winding

I've got a Singer 1036 that will not wind a bobbin. I thought no big deal - I'll just get a bobbin winder. Bobbins don't fit on the spindle! Ok. I'll try prewound bobbins! They don't work! Any suggestions? This seems to be a great machine - but one minor problem.

I've seen it referred to as a computerized machine - pretty sure that mine isn't. Unless I don't understand it very well. Which could easily be the case.

Help, please! I've followed the manual to the T, i think, tried everything that I could think of, but no luck.

I think they are just kind of hard to wind a bobbin on too, especially if you have never done it before, so maybe it depends on if you are just not doing it right, or something is really broken.

In a nut shell, with the top thread coming out needle eye, wrap thread end around your pressure foot screw, to fasten it down there. And hold it there. Stick bobbin in bobbin case, then move that white bobbin winding lever to the right over the bobbin. Leave the sliding door open half way. Then use your foot on the foot pedal real slow and hopefully bobbin will really start spinning and thread will catch on it, and it might wind for you. If so, afterwards, when you slide the door closed, that should just push that bobbin winding lever back to non bobbin winding position. If it does not, then you do it instead.
It's worth a try.

If nothing works, it could be a little piece of white plastic that is connected underneath that bobbin winding lever you push over the bobbin, that controls your gears under the machine there, is just all old and cracked and won't work anymore. When you push the bobbin winding lever over the bobbin, it is supposed to move that piece of plastic under the machine, and that moves your gears under there, to make it wind a bobbin. If that rather triangular cam piece of plastic under the machine, gets old and cracks off, or has a big crack in it, then that does not happen anymore. They call it a Bobbin winding shaft cam, and I think they all get old and crack eventually, though maybe they can work for a long time sometimes when still cracked, but if just too cracked or a piece falls off of it, then not anymore.

This is what it looks like, if you want to look at yours- to see if it's intact or not, but you do have to take the bottom off the machine to do that though.

Those kind of flat Touch and Sew bobbins don't fit and wind in those little Side winder bobbin winding machines. So to wind one, I think you would have to then wind it by hand, or in another like machine, or maybe you could put a hole in the middle of it and stick it on a very skinny electric or battery powered screw driver to try to wind on there, if you were really stuck, but I think it might be pretty slow going each time, either way. They really just don't make any pre-wound bobbins for that kind of machine either, (plastic disposable ones or sideless ones, as it's so old that they probably think no one would buy them. And you can't use other ones as they are way too tall and would just would never fit in the machine.

But if you lucky, maybe yours still works, but you are just not doing something, and when you do it all right, maybe it will start working.

I have the same machine with same bobbin winding problem. Thank you for very informative advice. This same machine will not pick up the bobbin thread to the top of the machine. Is this a related problem?

Well you do need intact and working lower gears to both sew, bring up the bobbin thread from below and also to just wind a bobbin in there. Just since bobbin does wind in the machine. And just since the same gears going around, tend to do all those things. So I don't know if a related problem to not being able to wind a bobbin or not on yours, but if perhaps you had even no intact lower gears left, it might make you even unable to even do all those 3 three things, and all at once, and you could check that out possibly.

Thank you. I'll check out the bobbin shift cam and see.

When the needle thread will not pick up the bobbin thread it can be that the needle is installed wrong. The long groove on the front of the needle needs to face toward the location of the bobbin function.

Check your manual.
