Date: 11/8/11 0:43 AM my wife has started sewing more and more recently, almost ever night! her old bernette isnt cutting the mustard anymore and i want to get her a new one for the holidays.
she doesnt need any fancy computer machine, just straight stitch, button hole, zigzag. she sews knits, wovens, makes dresses, jackets, vests...
my budget isnt so high, maybe $500, but id like to find her something smooth, reliable and nice. thanks for the help. -- Edited on 11/8/11 0:47 AM -- |

Date: 11/8/11 0:52 AM First thing is to find a dealer near you that you like, and one who let your wife return the machine if she doesn't love it.
Or you may want to give her a picture of a machine and then take her shopping. Sewing machines are very personal items. Some make you happy and some not so happy.
There are lots of great options for machines with a wide range of prices. Since it is a something she will have for a long time it is good to buy the best you can possibly afford with some growing, or better said learning into, room. There is also the lightly used option, and floor models that can stretch your buying power.

hsn.com has lots of sewing machines and it has a program called flex pay. They give u a few months to pay and take it out of ur account each month. A lot of us have bought our machines thru them. Just a thought. oh yes, u can return the machine in a certain amount of time if u do not like it or there is a problem with it. ------ ReRe1 |

Date: 11/8/11 8:01 AM The "right sewing machine" is one your wife has picked out. Too many times men buy things for their wives, and either they are so "super wompadine" that the woman is overwhelmed, or they aren't quite up to par with the woman's needs. Take her on a special trip, over to the sewing machine dealer, and show her which models you'd think she'd like and have her pick one. ------ "Having to squeeze the last drop of utility out of the land has the same desperate finality as having to chop up the furniture to keep warm" -- Aldo Leopold

Date: 11/8/11 9:41 AM Miss Fairchild is right! Your wife needs to be involved in the selection so that she will be completely happy with the machine she ends up with. One thing Id suggest though, is to go ahead and get one with a few extra bells and whistles. When I bought my first modern machine I just went with the basics because that was all I was used to using, and it wasn't long before I'd wished I'd gotten more features. I've since gotten another modern machine that has a bunch of stitches on it - I don't use them often, but it's nice to have them for special projects.

Date: 11/8/11 10:18 AM As well as seconding all the good advice, let me say what a nice thing it is that you want to get your wife a new machine! And keep the one she has now as well - a second machine for backup is always handy. Good luck and bless your heart!

Date: 11/8/11 10:50 AM I WORK at a sewing store and my advice is to get her a gift certificate. Last year I saw several "underwhelmed" wives bringing back "gifts" from their husband and trading UP.
BUT...if you want to buy her something-a Janome 4030 or 3050 is probably a good choice. ------ Brother ULT 2002D, Babylock Eclipse SX, Juki MO654DE, Singer 15-91 |
