Buying an American Girl doll... Anything I should know?

Anything I should know either about purchasing or sewing ... What are your experiences? Thanks.

If you can find one I would suggest one of the dolls made earlier than 2010,2011 when Mattel changed some of the manufacturing standards. The dollies prior to 2010 were made to certain specs & with some hand work done to the finishing touches. The clothes used to very well made & most were made here in the US I do not know about the current outfits. I know there are some very nice patterns out there & sometimes you find knitted outfits listed on Ebay or Etsy. If you can also get her the set of books to go with the dolly they tell the whole store of the doll the historical setting etc. And if it is Molly, Kit or Samantha the DVD is also very nice of their holiday eventure. ........... That way you can make sure the clothes fit and have your own model. I did that when my mom got one for my niece. I then made outfits for niece's doll that matched clothes I had made for her.

Although the period clothes are great, my nieces, daughters and friends love 'current' clothes that are made with todays' patterns. The small remants you can get at Joanne's are perfect for the doll clothes. When I gave it to her on Christmas (a few years ago), I also included a flannel nightgown and fleece quilt in Christmas fabric. It was all a great success! There are some fun patterns out there for that size doll, and most of the patterns include a few different "looks". Enjoy!

I made some clothes for it and the patterns I used were great, they fit fine. The patterns I used were Simplicity or McCalls if I remember correctly. ------ Sewing is my therapy!

I've scooped several up at JoAnn sales....in fact I *think* they're 5 for $5 there till Saturday. Most patterns contain several outfits. I've made clothes from their patterns in classes at my sewing machine dealer. The pattern paper is very sturdy.

The kids now days want the real doll outfits as well as anything you make.It's a whole collector's "thing" and it can run up into a lot of money.
