First impressions of the machine are mostly positive. Love the lighting, it sews beautifully. I'm finding the bobbin a bit challenging to get in correctly, but not sure why. Also, I had a real problem trying to use topstitching thread to do a buttonhole in a pair of jeans. I obviously need to figure out the tension. Will let you know more on Sunday because I plan on trying out everything including the BSR this weekend. ------

Date: 11/11/11 11:09 AM tholtz, did you find out what was causing the thread problem when you FM? It's way cheaper to get that fixed than buying a whole new machine. Just sayin'... Those 550s are about $3500 here in the US. |

Interesting as I'm having the same challenges with the 580. Glad it's not just me.  My last machine was a front loading rotary hook and the boobin was super easy to change, so I'm use to front loading machines. The 580 though is a lot harder because the hook race is set so far back in the machine. Also there is something about the bobbin case itself. The latch for me pulls out the wrong way. It seems made for a left handed person. Hopefully the more we use these machine the easier it will become.------

I'm going to my local quilting store today to purchase microtex & top stitching needles, a variety of 100% cotton threads and quilting gloves. I'm going to give it another try today and will let you know how it goes, I may also slow down my machine.
I was curious about this model because I really like the stitch regulator concept and can see where it would come in handy. I'm not in a position where I can run out and purchase this model and before letting go of that cash, would want to spend some hours trying it out.
If it's $3,500 in the U.S., it's probably closer to $4,200 here in Canada as most things are 20% more expensive for no reason other than greed. :P------

Date: 11/12/11 6:46 AM I don't own the 550, but I do have it's sister the 530. The difference is a few decorative stitches, along with the fact that the Bernina Stitch Regulator and walking foot come with the 550. Other than that, they are the same machine. I already had a BSR with my 730 and two walking feet so I opted to save the money and buy the 530.
I actually did all my test stitching at the dealer on the 550 and fell in love with it. The user interface is intuitive and it stitches beautifully.
I have used the BSR from my 730 on the 530 and it was wonderful. In my mind, it produced better stitches than on the 730 and was not as 'finicky'.
I hope to get a review on the 530 posted this weekend. Good luck in your try out of the 550, I will be interested to hear what you think.

I don't have any room to talk here as you know T.. Theres a reason that so many of us have so many machines..
But even if one could afford to buy all the machines they desired..its still important to find out about any problems/questions or so forth on the machines you already have. As soolip reinforced.. then you will know if you def need another machine ..
I didn't just run out over night and buy all my machines.. I accumulated them over a period of time.. and I see you following in my footsteps ... its nice to see you are taking your sewing seriously and doing a lot of it. So that means over time as you add to your skills and the projects you take on.. you may very well need more machines..
Of course buying them just to have them is fun too..  |
