Hi, I went shopping for denim this afternoon and noticed that there's not anything on the label to say what weight it is. Can you do a calculation by weighing the fabric?

I think it's ounces per yard. Lura's (online) lists the ounces, which makes it much easier to know what you're getting.

You could weigh the fabric. However, the width of the fabric matters. You would get a different result by weighing one square yard (36" by 36") of denim than by weighing one linear yard of 60" fabric (36" by 60"). My hunch (though I'm only guessing) is that manufacturers weigh one square yard so they have a standard measure of comparison.
