I am looking for Shammi cloth. ( OK, actually it's for my sister) You know...the stuff L.L. Bean makes those wonderful warm heavy flannel shirts out of. I used to be able to find it in Maine when I lived there and now it seems to no longer exist. Does anyone know where I can find this? On line or in a store?? I live in NC (on the boarder of NC and VA...near Chesapeake, VA) and my sister lives in southern Maine. Any help would be appreciated.

The only place I've found it is in the auto supply sections. You can find the real Chamois sold as well as a look-a-alike in the bags. I did have one pattern that required it and that was their suggestion also. Hopefully, someone will have seen some elsewhere.

Thanks JAnnw, but I don't think we are thinking of the same thing. The shammi I talking about is for making men's shirts. I used to get it at Joann's fabrics. It's 60" wide, very thick and warm. It's more like a super thick brushed flannel.

Chamois (it is a French word; the correct spelling may help you in your search) traditionally refers to deerskin, though sheepskin is sometimes substituted. There does not appear to be a lot of garment-weight cotton chamois yardage on the retail market. A google search for "cotton chamois fabric" turned up a few upholstery weight fabrics and this quilting fabric. You might ask the quilting store if they do samples.

If you check the description from L.L. Bean it's described as a Portuguese flannel. You might have better luck searching for that or even Portuguese flannel sheets. With the price of good sheets, they might be expensive though.

Thank you everyone. I realized that I had been spelling it wrong ! No wonder I kept getting the "sham wow" site!!I'll keep looking...maybe that quilt site will yield what I am looking for.
