November 22, 1963 Do you remember it? Where were you when you heard the news?
PegL   Advanced MO USA Member since 2/18/04 Posts: 1328	Login to reply to this post Like this post Subject: November 23, 1963 Date: 11/22/11 12:33 PM On this date in 1963 I was a junior in high school at Putnum City High School in Oklahoma City, OK. I was in English class when an announcement came over the loud speaker system that stunned and shocked us all, students and teachers alike. President John F. Kennedy had been assassinated. Shortly after that school was dismissed for the day and the buses arrived to take students home. My father was a radio announcer most of my life and was on the air at that time on KJEM radio in OKC when the teletypes bells began ringing alerting them to important news. My Dad read the news about the assassination on the air and continued to read everything that arrived that day and for the rest of the week during his air time. Dad, and the rest of the staff, kept every scrap of paper that came off the teletype machines (both UPI and AP) for the next ten days or so. Dad gave me the entire collection and I still have all of it, along with newspapers and magazines from that time in history. The assassination of JFK changed who we were as a country. At the time I did not really understand it.... except I knew Walter Cronkite was very sad & upset & that made me upset. I think I was in 3rd grade. ............ I was the same age as Caroline was. DH & I talked about this morning when we saw the date. Very sad indeed. ------ I am a gal from Kalamazoo.... oh what a gal... smile.... It is in Michigan... la la la ...love that Glen Miller classic! I can remember the funeral and definitely how sad I was for the family. I did not realize what it was for the country.

I still remember it vividly, even though I was only in second grade. I remember that everyone was so shaken that I forgot my coat and scarf and went home on the bus without them...my great aunt had to bring me back to school because I had no coat. I remember teachers crying, then my mom and great aunt crying at home. There was no school for several days after and I watched the funeral procession on TV. Suddenly, the TV screen went black, and the school principal came on the public address system. The principal sounded upset but her voice was so muffled, no one could understand what she said. Still, all the kids knew something terrible had happened. After all, this was the era of the Cuban Missle Crisis and "duck and cover" drills as protection from a Soviet nuclear attack. The teacher left the classroom, and five minutes later she returned, all the color drained from her face. She told us the President had been shot. All the girls in the class, including me, immediately started crying. An hour later, we were told the President had died, and we were sent home. Walking home, I felt the world around me had collapsed. Looking back on it now, I can say with certainty that it actually had. The Kennedy assassination was the defining moment for the US during my lifetime and I believe it had a greater lasting impact on the coutry than even 9/11. The changes began almost immediately. Just one month later, the Beatles burst upon the scene and triggered a manic reaction (Beatlemania) from millions of preteen girls like me who had had enough of sadness and grief. Less than two years later, Kennedy's successor Lyndon Johnson dramatically escalated the war in Vietnam, which brought even greater changes, turmoil and strife. If you look at photos and movies or read books and magazines from 1962 (the last full year of normality) and compare them to ones from just five years later, you will see drastic differences in fashions, values and the unity and cohesion of the country. We were at my grandparent's farm. I remember watching the TV and being so puzzled by it all. The announcers kept saying President Kennedy was dead, but then the TV would show him making speeches, being with his family, etc. I was too young to understand that what I was seeing were film clips, not the living man. The nuns had us all kneel next to our desks to pray for what seemed like a long time and then the entire school assembled and we had more prayer. They didn't release us early, possibly because so many of us took public transportation and didn't live within walking distance of the school. I know it was a very somber time that evening at my home as well. It truly was a shock to the nation.

Hubby was 6 yrs old and happened to be home sick from school. He was watching tv when the news broke in. He went into the other room to tell his foster parents that President Kennedy had been shot and he got beat for "making up such horrible lies about the President." I wonder if his foster parents ever felt bad about that once they realized that he was telling the truth.
