I am about to make a dress using a vintage pattern Simplicity 7082, a-line dress with bell sleeves. I am just shy of 5'1" and I can tell by just looking at the pattern that the french dart that curves down to the side seam will just be too long and I need to shorten the pattern about an inch or so at the waist which is right in the middle of the french dart.
I have googled and searched and have not found instructions on either how to alter or how to draw a new french dart. This one is not a simple dart it has a slight curve to it. Help please. I looked at the book Fit for Real People and all it says is to draw a curved dart with a French curve. No further instructions. Also it says to make a sample with the same grain as pattern to see if I like it before I cut it out of the fashion fabric.

First of all you want to shorten it between the bust and waist, not at the waist. Just tuck out the amount you need to shorten and blend the lines of the dart, just as you would any shortened seam line. Use a french curve to make it easier.
