Date: 11/25/11 11:16 AM I hope posting on the board will help me with this....
Right now I have plenty of fabric to make everything my little heart desires ... over and over again! My fabric fast isn't being inspired by money concerns as much as it is by "waste" concerns. It does no one any good for my fabric to sit in plastic containers. The quantity I have doesn't even make ME feel good.
So, my plan is to not buy any more fabric until Black Friday next year (see, I'm building in a fabric-buying reward if I make it!).
I will have a few exceptions to my rule. If I need something for immediate use, I'll get it. In my case, that might be something like "my daughter needs a black leotard for gym and I don't have any black lycra." If I actually run through all my "can be used for making muslins" fabric, I might have to buy suitable cheap fabric for that.
Anyone want to join me? Any ideas for other reasonable exceptions?

I will continue to abstain from adding paper crafting and scrapbooking into the mix no matter how tempting the little punches and supplies look.

Date: 11/25/11 3:01 PM I'd like to join in and my exception would be to buy some red denim. I am dying to make some red pants--has been on my to-do list for quite a while and would be a great addition to my wardrobe. I just need to read up on denim weight.

Date: 11/25/11 4:43 PM I'll join in, but it's a good thing I didn't see this before lunch, since I stopped by my favorite thrift shop and found two beautiful lengths of handwoven fabric. I would not have been able to walk away from that.... I also have numerous bins filled with fabric, and it's a waste and a pity to keep it all stored and buy more. so, thx for the inspiration, and I'll check back often.... ------

I have to get the fabric to make my granddaughter-to-be the Tangled dress. No way is that coming from stash! I did promise DD that I would make it for the little girl's late December birthday.
My other exceptions include my Mother-of-the-Bride dress/outift and anything needed to complete any garment whose primary fabric comes from stash, and, of course, muslin fabric as needed.
BTW, this is great timing! On the even years, Thanksgiving is spent in Philadelphia. My SIL hosts the family that springs from the maternal side of the family ~ anywhere from 30 to 40 of our nearest and dearest. If I have been very very good, I will stay into the following week and pay a "brief" visit to the fabric district.... ------

Date: 11/26/11 11:42 AM I'm in ! Fabric is spilling out of bins, off shelves, in bags, on hangers....not even sure what's there anymore (and my stash is small in comparison with some). Goal this year is to sew from stash ! ------

Date: 11/26/11 11:44 AM I'm working on this too! I will make some exceptions for myself, but as far as buying just to have on hand - not going there! My fabric cabinet is so full I can't put anything else in! It's embarrassing because to me, it is akin to hoarding.
Yesterday I finished a pair of pants from stash and cut out a blouse. Today I am going to finish the blouse and cut a jacket. I have a lot of jacket/coat fabrics that need to use. ------

Date: 11/26/11 11:48 AM Now that I have just finished buying fabrics (that I wanted but honestly did not need) at fantastic Black Friday discounts, I am in.
I have really slowed down on my fabric-buying by staying away from temptation -- I just don't look at those ads, emails, posts about sales and offers. I go look at those boxes of fabric instead.
So when Black Friday or Cyber Monday rolls around, it feels fun and even prudent to get fantastic fabrics at fantastic prices or with fantastic bonuses.
I know it's not *really* prudent, but, hey, a person can dream!

Date: 11/26/11 11:55 AM I do this on occasion. I see no reason to buy fabric that I like and then not use it. But, I don't have enough fabric to last a year.
I have 2 totes of fabric in storage and another 2 filled with patterns and fabric of stuff I am going to make. Sounds like more then it is. A good tote is apron fabrics, and the rest will only make about 50 things - and I'm down to no clothes. |
