Hey all,

I have been patterning a pair of jeans from scratch. Meaning I took my own measurements and created the pattern. So far, the majority of the pant fits pretty well, but they are giving me a "flat bottom" appearance. Mind you, I do have a bottom, so its definitely the jeans fit that is causing this problem. Anyway, does anyone have any advice on how to "contour" the pattern so that it creates a more "round" appearance? The jeans fit and even when i rip open the side seams to create more room, the "flat" problem still occurs. Would I need to maybe adjust the center back seam? The denim is 98%cotton 2% stretch.

It has to do with your rear crotch curve.

I use HotPatterns as a template for my crotch curve because their L-shaped curve works best with my shape. But other people prefer other curves (Burda also does a very flattering pant for a rounder bottom).

You might want to compare the crotch curve you drafted to other patterns and try some variations.

Going with the school of thought that the more information you take in on the subject, the better your understanding, am wondering if you had looked over this thread?

I have a video on my blog about new cut of jeans that has 4 darts at the back to create round bottom - 2 at waistline and 2 at side seam. Check it out, they really make a difference to how the bottom looks.

Great video, Lena.

I'd been thinking about two approaches. One was to put a dart on the center back seam and try to put it low enough to have it somewhat hidden in the beginning of the crotch curve. The stitching on the back side leg darts on the video that links it into the decorative back pocket stitching is very finished looking though.

The other thought I had, for myself, is to go with a bit of a double waistband in the back. A super strength stretchy under band to keep the pants up and the over band floating somewhat so it will ride wherever it needs to be for the function or activity.

Would the dart be a nuisance in such peculiar spot? The thickness of the dart on denim might be really uncomfortable down below. And another approach creates a "balconette" for your bottom, right?It might work like a sculpting hosiery!

Its great to see there are so many people out there that are as enthusiastic about sewing/ Patterning as me!! :-D I'm going to give the different shaped crotch curve a try. The dart approach doesn't really go with this design, but I will keep that in mind for future Thanks again everyone!

Well, Lena, I thought I'd give it a try. Of course, in our climate, I'd only be using a light denim with a pressed open dart. This is in the lineup for early spring projects, I'll post as to whether it has possibilities or is a total dud.


The refreshing thing about krtuttle928's thread is to see more people thinking about the waist down portion of their body in three dimensions.
