Date: 11/30/11 4:09 PM I must be getting old. A girl's night out is a trip with friends to World Market for their buy one get one free coffee sale, then a trip to the grocery store! When I was younger a girl's nigh out consisted of drinking and carousing until the wee hours...LOL. Hello middle age! ------

If I make it past 11:30 it is really something. Mind you I am frequently up by 2:30 usually because I am too hot to sleep compliments of menopause (I think). I don't know if any of you recalls a commerical with a woman who, in her shorts and tank tee shirt, goes outside in a blizzard to fire up the air conditioner. That would be me except we don't have a/c.
I rock the hours away by reading. I would sew but I might wake up DH. Good times.... I feel so old and, strangely perhaps, irrelevant and no longer required.

Date: 11/30/11 8:24 PM This is not a 'girls night out' reply, but part of a conversation DH and I had 10 days ago.
He wanted to do 'something fun". I asked 'what is fun anymore"? Honestly, I have no clue. We have been married nearly 26 years. We do not like to go to movies, as it is nearly all trash. We are not people who walk malls. I can barely get him outside most of the year as it is. I asked how long he wanted to be gone from home. Two hours and not more than that. Well, that does not give us much to do.
To drive to the beach is about 2 hours and we have to have the dogs stay with friends for the day. No, that was out. To drive to Mt. Hood was also too far and he does not want to go up there in the winter time. North? South? We are in our 50's, so ice skating and rollar skates are not good options, except for broken bones... He was not hungry, so no food. We did not need to go to Best Buy for anything. We already had plenty of coffee, so no trip to Peets.
I think we are boring in our "old age". We do not even go to World Market for the coffee.

Date: 11/30/11 8:32 PM We have a lake here, and my DH likes to go down to the waterfront and sit and watch the boats and the people - it's pretty nice in the good weather, and you can sometimes feed the ducks.There are ferry rides on the lake and a tour boat with an historic tour which covers the history and archaeology of the lake. AND there are dinner cruises - expensive. To go out for two hours would be a very short trip - you sure your DH didn't want to do "something fun" at home? ------

You ARE required! Now that you can program your time, read, sew, rock, and think positive thoughts - read a book by the Dalai Lama - what a good man he is - a kind and funny guy who really puts his money where his mouth is and has lived through a lot - not a bone of strictness in him, except for his constant reminders to be kind. I skim his books, and have a few on my NOOK. Let's see - if you can't sleep - that's O.K...it goes away - there is a light at the en of that menopause tunnel - I am out the other side. I love it there.Probably I was always "old," as I certainly never was one to carouse or the like. I always enjoyed the quiet reading and have a new sig file about that thanks to "The Middle". ;)------

Date: 11/30/11 8:50 PM OK, I confess... my most recent girls-night-out was the Wednesday before Thanksgiving. A friend and I went out to catch a late supper and some jazz.
Since last December, I find I go out to eat with one of my single/divorced/widowed girlfriends at least every other week and depending on which friend, we might catch some jazz. With one friend, it includes martinis so we hit this one place on the night when martinis are half off and use a coupon for dinner. Another friend is a red wine drinker and we have been known to kill a bottle together. With the others, one glass of wine is usually it.
My town is home to a major university and, between what comes to the university and what happens in town, there is a lot to do that is free or low cost in addition to world class music/theater and lots in-between. We also have a beautiful historic movie theater which often has interesting events and generally is in the affordable category. DH & I used to take advantage of so much. Just because he is gone is no reason for me to stop living too.
I also live near many parks, some along our local river. Most days I drive over to this one park and walk for an hour or so, sometime between late morning and mid-afternoon since the ride home is a route that can get trafficky at the end of the business day. The other tihng is I have begun to do some seletive volunteer work, mostly for one day/week-end events.
OTOH, I am finding my way around a new life circumstance quite a few years sooner than we'd hoped. Maybe that has something to do with my patterns for going out and about when an interesting oipportunity presents itself.
Re movies... If anyone has seen Clooney's new movie, The Descendents, you will appreciate that I kept kicking myself for not knowing more about it before agreeing to accompany one of my firends. Man, I did not need that one!

My girlfriends are not getting out much either. Illness and lack of funds.
I didn't think I would ever say this but, I kind of like staying home. ------
