The headset I ordered to use google voice doesn't work with my Mac! It was this headset. I can hear fine with the headphones, it's the microphone part that doesn't produce any sound through my Mac.

I got two headsets so my son could have one too and neither one works so I sort of ruled out the broken headset thought. My son tried the headset on his Mac laptop and it didn't work for him either. I did a little research online to see what the problem might be and somewhere I read that the Macs need headsets with the USB connector, that using the separate jacks for headphones and microphone does not work. Is this true?

Any recommendations for a decent reasonably priced headset that works with a Mac?

I had this problem with a headset I bought, but on a windows machine. In the volume control area there are various controls for input/output; when I manipulated those the microphone improved.

maybe this will help; skype, not google, but should be the same: sound control info

In System Preferences, there's a Sound preference. You need to click on Input and select the Line In option.

Your son's Mac laptop should have its own built-in microphone (next to the camera), that works pretty well.

Yes, I have already checked the line in and volume controls on my computer and all were on and up. Thanks for the thought, it's always good to be reminded in case one forgot the simplest solution.

My son uses his built in microphone on his laptop, he was testing the headset for me. I had gotten him one to use if he wanted a more private option for using his google voice. He has an iphone but when he visits here he has no cell service and uses google voice on his laptop instead.

Do you have a cellphone headset with microphone? If the computer is registering the microphone, it should show up in the Sound control panel as an EXTERNAL microphone, not as the audio line-in port. I just tested it with my iPhone headset mic and it immediately registered it and when I spoke into the headset, the sound bars showed up. That would at least prove that it works as it should. I hadn't heard about any need to use a USB mic.

I may have a hands free thing for my cellphone, somewhere. It would be several years old and not by apple, but that's a good idea to try it out. I'll look for it tomorrow. I know my son has one for his iphone but he won't be back until next week. I can experiment with that too.

The words external microphone did not show up with the head set, only the words line in audio. It all seemed so silly, like it should work but then nothing.
