I just got a Husqvarna Sapphire 835 and I am wondering which foot is better...the standard open toe stippling foot or the spring loaded one? There is about $25 difference in the price and am curious what other quilters out there think. Thanks for any info.

The presser foot I like best is the open toe stippling foot.I do have both types for my Viking, but like the stippling foot - perhaps others have other opinions. Good luck! :)

I like the spring loaded open toe stippling foot, but the "R" foot, the one that floats over the top, is really nice if you're going fast.

Can anyone tell me the difference between the spring loaded one and the regular one?

I'm pretty sure this would go on a Platinum - it's the same foot I bought for my Lily and for the Sapphire. I hope the board moderators don't shut me down for advertising - I'm posting a link to a website that has the foot for illustration purposes only!

It moves up and down with the needle, which seems to give me a bit more control.

Spring loaded hops over seams better.

I also just got a Viking Sapphire 835 and want to try machine quilting-I'm a long time quilter but have not machine quilted. Do I want a walking foot? I would like to start by ditch stitching but also will try free motion. Any suggestions for getting started? hollycvd

A walking foot is great for straight line quilting; for free motion you'll need a darning foot of some sort. If you haven't already, you might look at Harriet Hargrave's book on machine quilting, or one of Diane Gaudynski's books. They give a good idea of what you'll need to machine quilt, tips on feet, thread, needles - the whole shebang.

I understand that Viking is claiming that you don't need a walking foot with the Sapphire 875, but I'm not sure I'd believe them, LOL. It's expensive, but it works really well.

A clear darning or embroidery foot is usually recommended as you can better see what is stitching.

Read the manual for your machine. Some machines have different set ups for FMS.

Your machine may well have a PRESSURE adjustment for the presser foot. This may or may not require adjusting for FMS.
